Is the future now for Green Bay's LT?

The last time I saw the Packers in person, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was running for his life. So Im more than a little interested in a relatively quiet development thats taken place since then.

[img_r]http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/1028/nfl_a_lang1_300.jpg[/img_r]Rookie T.J. Lang played left tackle for portions of the Packers games against Minnesota and Detroit, and then replaced injured starter Chad Clifton for the entirety of last Sundays 31-3 victory at Cleveland. Hes been impressive at times and given up pressure on other occasions, but its notable that coach Mike McCarthy has rarely missed an opportunity to praise his performance.

Clifton is nursing an ankle injury and isnt likely to practice until Friday at the earliest. We dont know for sure who will start Sunday at Lambeau Field, but its enough to make an interloper wonder if the Packers arent hoping/praying/pushing Lang to take over the position on a more permanent basis.

During a conference call Wednesday, McCarthy said Lang "really fits the mold of a number of" recent draft picks and "has done a good job." He added: "Hes taken advantage of the opportunity he got to play in Cleveland, [and] Ive been pleased with the way hes played in the substitution role in both Minnesota and [against] Detroit."

We then asked McCarthy whether he could foresee Lang as his left tackle for the long term. McCarthys response: "Yeah, potentially. No doubt. If he keeps playing the way he is, hell be playing there for a long time."

Successful left tackles usually have a certain size and a unique skill set. When some NFL teams looked at the 6-foot-4, 316-pound Lang this winter, they projected him as a guard. McCarthy said the Packers viewed him as a tackle who could move inside if needed.

But regardless of whether Lang looks like the prototypical left tackle, theres at least some anecdotal evidence that the Clifton era is winding down in Green Bay. His contract will expire this winter and the ankle has forced him to miss at least a portion of five games this season. Im not sure if Lang is the full-time answer at the position, but the search is on.

All of which brings us to Wednesdays line of the day. If he starts Sunday, Lang will match up against Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen, who registered 4.5 sacks against the Packers earlier this month.

During a conference call with Wisconsin reporters, Allen was asked whether he was licking his chops to play against a rookie.

"I have to be honest," Allen said. "If I was licking my chops over a dude, Id be scared of myself."

I'm actually not worried about Lang going up against Allen this Sunday, as crazy as it sounds. He did do a good job against him the 1st time, just that one mistake ended up in a sack, figure it was just those "rookie mistakes". For rookies, there are going to be those up and downs, but so far, I think he's done a fine job. Hopefully he can keep Rodgers' jersey clean this week.

Honestly I think it will be better with Lang in there IF Mike McCarthy keeps the offense balanced. The Packers have been 4-0 when Grant gets the ball move the 15 times... I don't think it's Grant but it's keeping the offense balanced. Also with Lang vs. Allen match up run right at Allen, I give Lang the match up in the running game battle. Also run a reverse or fake one way and then go to Allen side. He doesn't like keeping containment when he thinks the other team is running it to the other side. Running the ball also gets the play action working. The Vikings defense knows how to get sacks but that's about it. Just need something to slow them down... use the running game....

Lang's actually practiced the position now.

Good stuff man, I pretty much agree with just about everything you said. I think that's a very good point though, to keep things balanced and not allow the Viking D-Line to get into a rhythm with their pass rush. Also with Winfield out, it's an obvious advantage to us.

Larry Johnson gets in trouble for saying the word "fag". Is Allen any better for making frequent innuendos that illuminate his homophobia? Allen, if you want to make homophobic jokes with your buddies, fine, but keep it out of the media.

I'm scared for Lang if he has to go up against Allen. I'm intrigued to see how he can do, but also very scared.

To be honest, I don't know how much he does it. But I say there's a huge difference between dropping "the other f bomb" left and right, and actually being clever. Still not desirable, but that's the difference between being rude and being funny. Then again, I have a fairly dark sense of humor and what I find funny other people might not.

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
