Through seven-plus years of futility, Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford Sr. has inexplicably stood behind his team president, Matt Millen.

Its now reached the point where even Fords own son is publicly questioning his father.

Asked today what he thought of the way the Lions played yesterday at San Francisco, William Clay Ford Jr. said, It was an embarrassment, the fans deserve better, and if I had the authority, I would have fired the general manager.

When asked again, directly, if he would fire Millen, Ford Jr. said, Yes, but I dont have that authority.

And thats the bottom line: Ford Jr. doesnt have that authority, and as long as Ford Sr. is alive, Millens job appears to be safe.

Times like this, I'm glad I'm not a Lions fan.

And now that Lions fans KNOW that JR. would dump Millen if SR. wasn't there, i'd make sure to put extra security around SR.!!!!

Ford Jr. said it, but he didn't say it all

"So it was nice of Bill Ford Jr. to state the obvious. But you can fire the GM, youll still have the team. You can fire the team, youll still have the owner. You can fire the owner, and youll have a good start.

But you cant fire the owner.

You see our problem."

BTW where is BIG3? Has he accomplished the transition from the old forum to PH.com and is he still a Lion or did he leave the dark side and is one of us now?

Have a nice day,
Harald
It was a tight game, and it swayed back and forth. And sure enough, he pulled out a victory at the end...
I swear to you, he smiled while he was doing it. He smiled til the end.
We’ll miss you, gunslinger.

Bit off-topic, but it just reminded me of this :

Anyway, I hope for the sake of the Lions fans, that Sr. will come to his senses and fire the guy soon. If it goes on like this, they'll have 20 WRs on the roster and crappy players on all other positions.

PFT's take on the situation in Detroit:

WHAT NEXT FOR THE LIONS?
Posted by Mike Florio on September 24, 2008, 10:51 a.m.

With CEO Matt Millen out of Detroit after seven-plus years of something far worse than mediocrity, the question now becomes what will the Lions do next?

A G.M.-level employee rarely is fired during a football season, primarily since the G.M. really doesnt do much once the season starts. Sure, theres churning at the bottom of the roster and advance planning for free agency and the draft and a rare trade, but dumping the G.M. wont really do anything to affect whether the team wins games or loses them during the season in which the move occurred.

The other problem is that it makes it difficult if not impossible to hire a permanent replacement in the short term, unless someone currently not under contract with a team is pursued.

Look for current Assistant G.M. Martin Mayhew to possibly be elevated into the role of G.M. Though, on one hand, Mayhew is part of the problem, on the other hand hes tight with COO Tom Lewand, who is tight with Bill Ford Jr.

Speaking of Lewand, hes likely to come out of this thing with greater authority.

But should he?

Though hes not generally known as a guy with direct ties to the football program, his job description places his fingerprints all over the thing. According to his bio on the teams web site, Lewand operates as the teams chief contract negotiator and architect of the salary cap, and oversees all day-to-day business operations of both the Detroit Lions and Ford Field entities. This includes the management of finance, football administration, player development, security, equipment operations, medical staff, ticketing, sales and marketing, public/media relations, broadcasting, human resources, Ford Field operations and administration, and the development of Ford Fields lease space in the stadiums progression as a multi-use facility.

Heres the kicker, again from Lewands bio: Lewands leadership positions every aspect of the Lions organization, including Ford Field operations, to significantly impact the Lions drive for a Super Bowl title. For Lewand, everything from football transactions to Ford Field events influences the teams ability to compete and win.

Logic and common sense tell us, then, that if Lewands positions significantly impact the Lions drive for a Super Bowl title and that everything he does influences the teams ability to compete and win, the chronic absence of a Super Bowl title (of course, you first need to get to the playoffs) and the inability of the team to consistently compete and win means that he should be fired, too.

But Lewand is one of these business types who will try to claim credit when things go well on the field, but then shoulder no blame when the franchise becomes a consistent bottom-feeder.

In our view, the entire organization should be gutted, and a new administration should be hired. Its the only way to erase the stench of the last seven years.

The timing of Millens departure will make that much harder to do. We believe that, over the next three months, Lewand and Mayhew will cozy up even closer to Bill Ford Jr., and Mayhew will emerge as the leading candidate for the permanent job (if, that is, the Lions hire him as G.M. on an interim basis only; we dont rule out the possibility of Mayhew being installed as the successor to Millen permanently).

So even though Lions fans currently are partying like drunken munchkins, it would be wise to keep in mind that the Wicked Witch of the West could end up being even worse than the witch on whom the house was finally dropped.

beast (18h) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (20h) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21h) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21h) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21h) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : They have that whole 12th man thing so ...
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Of the times we've played there, I just can't recall hearing our fans.
wpr (16-Dec) : Well done jdlax. Well done.
wpr (16-Dec) : I think more likely to be Pack fans that live in the area.
wpr (16-Dec) : Pack fans represent. I pointed it out early in the game to my wife. Announcers said Packers travel well.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : That was crazy to hear go pack go in Seattle of all plays. That 12 man thing an all
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : jdlax, good man!
jdlax (16-Dec) : Mucky, there were too many of us there to credit any single one but for sure i was 60% responsible.
