I have tried over the years to switch allegiances to a "local" team. I succeeded once, in a sense. I became a Baltimore Orioles fan. I could do this because Washington, D.C. did not have a baseball team, so it didn't seem to me to be a "switch", because I never was a Brewers fan, plus it wasn't a D.C. team, per se.
This was the era of Eddie, Cal, Bumbry, Palmer, etc. Then, ownership changed, they built Camden Yards, the Yankees stole our best pitcher (sound familiar?) and they have been a doormat, coupled with a strike...Baseball lost me.
Last year I came close to giving a shit about the Phillies. I am an "American League" type of fan, but they reminded me of an American League type of team.
I could only generate moderate interest and fandom, but was mildly pleased that they won.
I have slightly LESS interest this year... I just cannot do it. I cannot switch teams on a serious basis. I will not follow baseball until the Orioles return to respectability, and I don't see that happening in my lifetime as long as the Yankees and Red Sox are in the same division. All I can muster is a deep-seated hatred for the Yankees, because I feel that they have led to the demise of the entire sport.
So, put me down for the Phillies, but also put me down for a generalized meh on the whole damn thing.
Sad sport, nowadays, imo.
