Cocaine abuse can certainly damage the heart, though all the sources I've read state that there was no evidence of cocaine abuse. The guy was a billionaire; if he wanted to do a little smack, I don't have a problem with it. Though it may have shortened his life, which is selfish on his part, it's not like he was living a paragon of healthy choices anyway. Plenty of Americans everyday are endangering their hearts through entirely legal means. What's the difference? The end result is the same -- a stopped heart, grieving wife, fatherless children.

Well, cocaine is illegal. Thats one difference.
A guy that has so much to live for.....i just don't understand taking that kind of chance for a high. Especially at his age.
Illegal drugs arn't monitored. Who knows what it was cut with.

Of course, I don't think cocaine should be illegal. That's my point. But also off topic.

I see both sides of that argument. If they made drugs legal, they could somewhat control the "quality" of it.
But to me, legalizing stuff like cocaine is just opening the door to "legitimatise" a VERY dangerous drug.
Strong prescription drugs are controlled, and not easily aquired. Making cocaine legal would make people that might not otherwise take it, try it.

Cocaine is about as dangerous as lidocaine or novacaine, the drugs your dentist uses to numb your teeth when filling your cavities. In fact, they are chemically almost identical -- not surprising, given that they were originally synthesized from cocaine, which was (and in some areas still is) used by physicians as a local anaesthetic.

The dangers of cocaine, as with most drugs, is grossly overstated.

Any chemical -- even water -- can kill you. One of the methods of putting an animal down is to inject lidocaine -- the same stuff your doctor or dentist uses for minor procedures -- directly into the heart. It depolarizes the cardiac muscle cells, producing almost instant death. Does the fact that lidocaine could be used for murder mean it should be outlawed?

By the same token, if you huff Lysol (or virtually any aerosol), you can go into brain death fairly quickly. Should Lysol be illegal?

Caffeine is extremely addictive. Taken in not-so-large doses (approximately the equivalent of three or four cups of coffee), it causes heart arrythmia and can result in death. Should it too be illegal?

Responsibility for educated use of chemicals, for whatever reason, rests solely with the user. If people choose not to educate themselves in safe usage procedures -- the data is out there in abundance -- that's on them. It doesn't mean the chemicals should be outlawed.

As I've said before, I am a firm believer in natural selection. If you think hardlining cocaine is a great way to get a cheap thrill, more power to you, but don't expect me to have any sympathy for you when you go into premature heart failure.

The great thing about natural selection is, those dumb enough will do it, illegal or not.

I get fired up about this because I've had many people close to me throw their lives away (or nearly thrown away) due to many drugs, mary jane included. I've seen personally the bull shit people do to their loved ones to get a 'fix'.

Then I get to hear a group of people that want to legalize the same crap that changes people, that has very ill effects on their motor/mental skills, and I tend to get pissy.

To me, it's just like saying slavery should be legal. The only difference is the types of bondage one has as a slave to another man versus being a slave to a drug.

In my very passionate opinion, legalizing that crap is not the answer.

Yeah......that would be GREAT if all you were doing was sticking a little into your gums to numb a tooth. BIG difference if you are snorting it up to numb your entire BRAIN. I have no worries about a dental patient getting into a car after a novacaine shot. I do if some guy or gal is high on cocaine.

I'm sorry to be so blunt.....but that entire argument is like a piece of swiss cheese.
Lysol. What is the intent of use for Lysol? To disinfect.
Caffiene....was that intended to be used in amounts that could kill you?
Lidocaine. What is it intended to be used for? To numb for minor procedures.
What is the number one use for cocaine? TO GET HIGH.
A baseball bat can be used to murder. Should we outlaw them? How about a steak knife?
ANYTHING misused can be a cause of death. Thats a big difference from cocaine, which is only used to get a high.
WATER can kill. Yup.....jump in a lake with your arms and legs tied together, and you will drown. Or FOOD can kill you too. If you choke on a piece of food and no one is there to help you, you can DIE! Better outlaw FOOD!
Thats as much sense as your argument makes.
In my opinion, at least.
