Fentress: Anger of some Green Bay fans toward Brett Favre misguided

By Aaron Fentress, The Oregonian

A Green Bay fan burns a Brett Favre No. 4 Packers jersey. Another puts a jersey on a doormat. Others act even more childish toward their former hero.

[img_r]http://media.oregonlive.com/nfl/photo/jerseyburnjpg-e111d465a53cc98f_large.jpg[/img_r]
But the disdain is misguided. Wheres the disgust towards Packers management?

Green Bay fans live in denial. They are hanging on to some delusional, invented belief that Favre owed it to them to never play for the hated Minnesota Vikings, even when their team no longer wanted him.

Huh?

Green Bay fans no doubt love their franchise more than they do any one single player, even Favre. But the fact that many hold a grudge against Favre for playing for Minnesota, which defeated the Packers 30-23 on Monday night, seems preposterous.

It wasnt Favre's decision to ultimately end up in Minnesota over Green Bay. He sought to wear green and gold again. If anything, Packers fans should be upset with general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy. They, more than anyone else, are responsible for Mondays debacle.

Yes, Aaron Rodgers is a fine quarterback, good enough to maybe one day lead the Packers to the Super Bowl. But Favre is Favre. And the same passion that causes Packers fans to destroy No. 4 jerseys should have led them in 2008 to demand that the Packers bring back Favre at all costs prior to the 2008 season.

Sure, Favre "retired" and then unretired over and over. And yes, he threw that horrid interception against the Giants in the NFC championship game. But Favres only crime is being indecisive about giving up something he loves. In the end, isnt that the type of competitor youd want leading your team?

favrerodgers.JPGAP Photo/Morry GashMinnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre (4) and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers meet after the Vikings beat the Packers 30-23 on Monday night. Favre proved last year with the New York Jets that he could still play until an injury slowed him down late in the season. And look at him now. Hes got the Vikings at 4-0 with eight touchdown passes and one interception on the season.

Monday he completed 24 of 31 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, a performance that included several vintage, breathtaking throws.

None of this should be shocking. He had a MVP-caliber season in 2007 with Green Bay. And a team should never tell a MVP-caliber quarterback get away under any circumstances.

What does Green Bay have to show for its troubles? An 8-12 record over the last two seasons. Favre is 13-7, 12-3 when healthy. Granted, Rodgers has not been the problem in Green Bay. It would be unfair to lay the Packers demise at his feet.

But Favre has proven in the past that he can lead his team to victories when the defense is suspect. Rodgers has not.

Rodgers put up 384 yards on Monday. But he was sacked eight times. Some of those were his fault. Some can be blamed on a poor and battered offensive line. But does anyone truly believe that if the two quarterbacks switched teams on Monday that Green Bay would not have won?

Thompsons move not to bring back Favre was a power play. It had little to do with Rodgers development. Thompson and McCarthy wanted to move forward without the legend of Favre hanging over their heads. Understandable. But regrettable.

On Monday, Favre became the only NFL player to have won against all 32 NFL teams. That distinction could have been avoided.

But dont blame the man who has given Green Bay fans countless thrills. Blame those whose names youll barely remember a decade from now.

I especially like this one.

Dear God, why do people keep passing this off as THE story of what happened between GB and Favre? The retirement/unretirement thing was an absolute joke, and Favre received cracks about it from every media direction. Now it was Green Bay who was guilty of dumping him? Ha.

Obviously the guy that wrote that crap is the type to not bother with FACTS. Just another one of those "Favre is GOD" people.
I love Favre for what he did in his time here. But HE chose to leave, and the Packers let him leave.
I STILL think Favre wanted out, and wanted to make the Packers look bad. I think he dislikes TT, and wanted him to take the fall. He wanted to look "squeaky clean" to the fans.
But some of us actually THINK for ourselves.
So he's a Viking now. He's on the "enemy" team. So i won't cheer for him as long as he is on a different team. Why? I'm a PACKER fan. I was LONG before BF came here, and will be till i die.

Cheesey - I completey appreciate your viewpoint and understand it's a majority here, but I'll always cheer for former Packers. Unless of course they're playing us.

For example, there's talk about trading Kampy. No, of course it won't happen. But let's just say it does. Whatever team he goes on I'll hope he gets 20 sacks a year. Except I hope he gets a big fat zero tackles when playing us.

Just like if Woody left. I hope he'd play 3 more years and gets 10+ INTs a year and makes the Hall of Fame, but Driver/Jennings burn him for a TD a piece when we play his team.

I don't understand how anyone can hate a former Packer.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, MN isn't the enemy. The Cows and the Broncos are. They're the ones who kept us from getting more SB rings in the 90s, when we were in the position to do it. I'd love a rematch of '97. That SB left such a bad taste in my mouth and I have NEVER recovered from it.

I agree. There are two extremes here and those people are the ones getting all the media attention, it seems, making it look like at least half the fanbase is made up out of utterly retarded people.

Zombie......I don't "hate" Favre.
But i just won't cheer for him when he's on the Vikings. Anymore then i did for Longwell or Sharper when they were there. Does that mean i hate them? Nope. They just arn't a part of "my" team anymore, so my loyalty stays in Green Bay. Doesn't mean i hate ANY of them.
There are alot of people that feel the same as i do, and get thrown in the "hate" pile because we won't cheer for Favre while he is in that ugly purple.

beast (14h) : Seems like he was just pissed because he was no longer the starter
beast (14h) : Campbell is right, he's rich and he doesn't have to explain sh!t... but that attitude gives teams reasons to never sign him again.
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I have some doubt about all that
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I read De'Vondre Campbell's tweet this morning (via the New York Post) Florio says that if he invested his earnings wisely, he will be good
beast (20-Feb) : I haven't followed, but I believe he's good when healthy, just hasn't been able to stay healthy.
dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Felt like he was more interested in his body, than football. He flashed more than I expected
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : When he was coming out, I thought he'd be flash in pan.
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : Joey seems so forgettable compared to his brother for some reason
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Now they're back with another topic
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : oh lol
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I have a script that purges them now.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : 118 Topics with Message.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : what's 118 (besides a number)?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : They got 118 slapped in there.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : that's why it confused the hell out of me
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, but this is taking a headline and slapping it into the Packers Talk
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Wasnt there a time guests could post in the help forum?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : lol good question, kind of impressed!
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : So how is a guest posting?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Tell them its an emergency
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Working. Meetings.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Lots of fun; the spam goes back 4 or 5 pages by this point
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought you'd look for yourself and put 2 and 2 together lol. I overestimated ya ;)
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought Guests couldnt post?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : And gosh that's gonna be fun to clean up! hahaa
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Oh. Why not just say that then? Geez.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : check the main forum, seems a spam bot is running amok
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : What?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Is the Packers online game "Packers Predict" now available for 2024? I can't tell
Zero2Cool (17-Feb) : Bengals planning to Franchise Tag Tamaurice Higgins
Zero2Cool (14-Feb) : Packers are hiring Luke Getsy as senior offensive assistant.
Martha Careful (12-Feb) : I would love to have them both, esp. Crosby, but either might be too expensive.
Zero2Cool (12-Feb) : Keisean Nixon is trying to get Maxx Crosby and Davante Adams lol
Mucky Tundra (11-Feb) : Yeah where did it go?
packerfanoutwest (11-Feb) : or did you resctrict access to that topic?
