People here might appear smarter than they are. Don't want to say that I am in any way above them, but being able to speak multiple languages and having a lot of educations pointed towards internationalism can make 'us' look really smart, but really just only know a lot about just one single thing.

The Netherlands is about four times as small as Wisconsin, yet, we have the biggest harbor in Europe and the biggest one in the world untill 2004, when Shanghai harbor took over that title.

Points is, I think that we are really focusing on the entire globe, more than our own little country. We have to, really, if we want to stay in any kind of leading position in the world. Economical, medical, educational and technical.

I don't want to offend anyone here, but I often have the feeling that a decently big part of the USA still has the feeling that we're running around in loincloths, beating on drums and hunting lions with big sticks.

Zombie and I have talked about this before quite a bit and I really enjoyed it that time. We both got a little patriotic, but still, it was a good discussion. Please don't keep it to positives only. I'd like to know what would annoy a, for us, foreigner about a Dutch person. I can imagine that people being to themselfs and ignorant towards others needs could rank high for instance.

Thanks for all the ego boosting, btw, lol. I have the exact same feeling when talking to you, NSD, as you apparently have with me from time to time.

3. While I'm a book person, and while I would rather people read far more books than they did, I think it's inaccurate to say that Americans, especially young Americans don't read. All that time they spend on the Internet isn't just viewing porn and playing World of Warcraft. They're reading all the time. And often, at least if it goes to their passion, they're often reading at a quite sophisticated level.

Trippster......i agree with you that the fans reaction might be classless. I myself wouldn't respond that way. But when you put yourself out there, don't be surprised that SOME may act that way.
I have been attacked for some of my posts in the past. Some were downright nasty. But i knew that if i'm posting, i may get that reaction. I bet the majority of people wouldn't react that classless, but theres always some that will.
I wasn't saying it was right, just that you won't always be met with loving sweet comments.
And the internet and the way we communicate today just gives more opportunity to act liks a jack ass. Like you wrote, you shouldn't say something that you wouldn't say face to face. Todays lifestyle doesn't teach people how to communicate, or have class when doing so. Plus, there is no consequences for what they write. So they say nasty things because they CAN.
Plus kids today are taught that THEY are important. THEY matter. So they have no feeling for how they treat others. They don't CARE who they hurt.
Thats today's feeling-less age we live in.
I don't like it, either.

Wade - Good points. Funny thing is, I'm a musician who works as a Software Engineer because in reality, musicians starve. If I told you how much I made a year in my best year as a musician, you'd think I had to be selling crack on the side to survive (I waited tables).

As a musician, this young generation does circles around my generation. I can't believe how good they are. They're also so much smarter and more worldly than my generation. What they don't have though is they're not as rugged as we were.

When it comes to smartness, I do think my son's generation is smarter than ours, but like I said, not as rugged and a lot more dependent.

As for the English, yes, they are readers and also damn good writers. Good lyricists as well as I'd take English lyricists any day of the week over American ones. But I stand by them getting offended by pretty much everything and thinking they know everything when they don't. That's an aspect of their national character I'm not too fond of.

Rock - I'm still trying to come up with bad aspects of Dutch character, and the only thing I can come up with is you're tolerant to a fault. On paper, tolerance is a wonderful thing. But you can go too far with it, as you as a people have and it's come back to bite you in the ***. I know you know what I'm referring to but to keep this thread politically correct, I won't go further.

One bad thing about humans in general is we often take advantage of "niceness." I'm guilty of it too, so not pointing fingers here. One quick example is I had a Dutch boss years ago. Great guy, did circles around me intellectually (and that's saying something because I take pride in my brains), but was simply too nice. He ended up getting stuck with a lot of work because his "underlings" when they couldn't figure it out, would just leave it for him to finish.

Sometimes, i have wanted to change, to become a jerk, just to keep from being hurt by those kinds of people.
But in the end, i just can't do it. I don't WANT to be a jerk.
(Not that i'm perfect.....i CAN act like a jerk sometimes, and i know it)

Thats why i refuse to become one of those jerks. People KNOW the difference when they have been around you for awhile. And they can see if you are "real" or not.
My Dad was a TRUE kind of person, and taught me to be as well. When he died, his funeral was during a blizzard. Yet the funeral home was litterally packed with standing room only. He was loved because HE loved.

Oh, you're right about the English, no doubt about that. I have some great friends in England, but I've also seen a fair number of English with the being-offended-and-know-it-all disease. Probably because I have spent so much time in the academy (its hard to escape the disease here, regardless of the academic's national background), I just never thought of it as an English trait. (I always blamed it on the east coasters...but then, where did they get it? Perhaps Oxbridge envy.) But it's definitely there with the English.
