Cards' Morey promises brain for research

by Bob McManaman

Cardinals receiver and special teams player Sean Morey is one of three NFL players who on Monday agreed to donate their brains after death to a Boston University medical school program that studies sports brain injuries.

The other two NFL players donated their brains and spinal cord tissue to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy's program are Ravens center Matt Birk and Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu. They join more than 150 former athletes, including 40 retired NFL players, who already are in the program's brain-donation registry.

"There are a lot of dedicated people both in the NFL and the Players Association along with trainers that understand and recognize and manage concussions properly," Morey said. "But I think we fall short of educating players and helping players understand the serious, long-term effects of concussions.

"I just felt it was part of my duty as a member of the Players Association and as an active player to try and create awareness for all athletes at all levels."

The center's goal is to better understand the long-term effects of repeated concussions.

"When you are active, your contract, what you get paid, is based on the perception of your health, and no player wants to be perceived as being prone to concussions," said Chris Nowinski, the center's co-director. "That's why I am so impressed with these guys. I hope they are the first of many."

Doctors see sports-related brain trauma as a growing health crisis due to the discovery of the neurodegenerative disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a number of athletes who have recently died. The condition is caused by repetitive trauma to the brain.

Sufferers may experience memory loss, emotional instability, erratic behavior, depression and impulse control problems, progressing eventually to full-blown dementia.

The center was created in 2008 as a collaborative venture between BU Medical School and Sports Legacy Institute.

That's quite a noble cause. A little eery to hear about Lofa Tatupu and Matt Birk donating their brains, themselfs, really, to science, but this should help the neurologists a lot.

This'll benefit humanity, but mainly proffesional athletes, a lot down the stretch, I reckon.

Yeah it gave me a slight chill to think about.

Personally I'd rather keep my brain frozen or otherwise preserved than sliced and diced.

You know what Jay Leno said:

"Three NFL players announced yesterday they will donate their brains to science after they die. Actually, they were gonna ask Brett Favre to do that but they were afraid after he died, he'd change his mind and want the brain back."
This is a placeholder

Wow, that is just crazy to think about.

Man, Jay Leno sure did hit that joke on the head. I like how everyone INCLUDING Favre makes fun of his indecisiveness. Anyone catch the new Favre commercial with the tvs?

T.O. might as well donate his brain NOW.
He's not using it anyway!

Oh....YES Akamp! I saw those Favre commercials for Sears. I LOVED them! The fact that he can poke fun at himself was pretty funny!

Good to know that Favre is aware of how people see him, and can make fun of himself.

I love the part, Sears rep: "Some guys waffle, flip-flop.. They just can't make a decision..."
Favre: "I can't stand those guys!"

After watching the past year and a half unfold.. I am not so sure Brett hasn't donated his already.

Seriously though.. tip of the cap to those doing the real donating.

Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : Joey seems so forgettable compared to his brother for some reason
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
