We have been one of the most penalized teams in the NFL since McCarthy took over. This is something that needs to be corrected if we want to be a consistant winner.

C.D. at Packerchatters wrote a great article about this very issue.

To me, the penalty situation is something that settles directly on the shoulders of the head coach, and it is time to see if McCarthy is going to be more willing to resort to accountability rather than excuses this year. If players are making stupid mistakes that costs the rest of the team field position and momentum, they need to know that the consequence is more than just working on their pad level in practice again this week.

Here is the rest:

EDIT: And if you think the majority of the penalties were a result of the defensive scheme, you are wrong.

The Packers were penalized 110 times last year.

37 came from the defense.

48 from the offense

25 from the special teams(most since 2000)

Its not a scheme problem. Its a coaching problem.

Although we do get penalised a lot, we did have:

a) Ahmad Carroll
b) Man coverage

I expect that the defensive penalties should decrease now that we have more of an opportunistic defense.

It would be very interesting to tally the offensive line penalties over the past few seasons and compare it to this year's.

Yeah the tight man coverage has gotten a lot more on the DL for the back 7. But the OL and ST needs to be better about it too.

It is pretty bad, indeed. The amount of holding and false start penalties are especially annoying. McCarthy needs to either do something about it himself or get on Campen's back to fix this.

I can imagine that you'd have some problems in Qwest Field or somewhere like that, but last year we had about 4 false start/holding penalties in a row... on our own turf. That's just unacceptable.

Yes I am aware, however penalty problems have been plaguing the Packers for awhile now. There really should be some improvement in 2009. Will try to remember to revisit this thread at the end of the season to see how we stacked up.

I think we'll get less penalties because of the defensive change. I think part of it also was having those young offensive lineman trying to develop into NFL calibur players while playing. Hopefully that will decrease, because I feel like they have developed to that level now. Clifton has always been prone to flags, even under Sherman.
The special teams thing is a problem. Jarrett Bush has to get his shiz together.

I was shocked when I seen a topic named "Penalties" and that the author of said topic was Ironman. Shocked. Absolutely shocked.

It's not a coach problem, it's a player problem.
