New safety Derrick Martin wants to make good first impression

By Tom Pelissero tpelisse@greenbaypressgazette.com September 6, 2009

Derrick Martin says hes thrilled to have a fresh start with the Green Bay Packers, and as long as hes leaving his past in Baltimore, theres one thing hed like to make clear.

I never failed a drug test, Martin said Sunday night, shortly after meeting with coaches and taking his physical at Lambeau Field.

I never failed a drug test. One more time I never failed a drug test. One more time

Acquired from the Ravens in a cutdown-day deal for offensive lineman Tony Moll, Martin arrives in Green Bay with a reputation as a tough, versatile defensive back who can play safety, corner and inside in subpackages as well as factor on special teams.

Martin also arrives as the guy who, in the summer of 2008, was arrested at a Cleveland airport security checkpoint with what police said were believed to be three small bags of marijuana in his luggage.

The charges later were dropped, Martin served a one-game suspension, and the NFL released him from the evaluation stage of its substance-abuse program within 90 days.

But the stigma is something Martin, 24, knows he can overcome only by making plays on the field and staying out of trouble off of it.

It was a long weekend; it was some stuff that got caught up in my bag from someone else, Martin said. I never failed a drug test. Not in the drug program or nothing. Hopefully, it helps (people) understand I wasnt using the drugs.

Other than that, it was a bad situation, and I got through it. People that know me know Im a positive guy.

The Packers thought enough of the 5-foot-10, 198-pound Martin to cut Anthony Smith, who had been productive as the teams No. 3 safety in the preseason but lacked Martins versatility. Like Smith, Martin has three seasons of experience in the 3-4 defense, although Martin shifted his primary focus to safety from cornerback only this year.

Hes coming off a rocky 15 months that included the arrest; a torn labrum that required surgery and ended his 2008 season after only four games; and then going untendered as a restricted free agent before re-signing with Baltimore for the veteran minimum.

But Martin says hes healthy, and he was having a strong camp before the trade to the Packers, who play a little more two-deep coverage than the Ravens but otherwise run a similar, multiple-look scheme.

Once Martin gets up to speed on terminology, he seems to have the inside track to be the No. 3 safety and perhaps play as the sixth defensive back in the dime defense as well.

Wherever they can use me, I just want to be a help to the team, Martin said. At the safety, nickel, dime, corner wherever they see fit, Im going to be able to make an impact for them.

General Manager Ted Thompson said the Packers liked Martin since his days at the University of Wyoming, where he started 2 years before declaring early and being selected in the sixth round (208th overall) of the 2006 draft.

Character, Thompson said, was not a major concern.

We were aware of the things that have happened, Thompson said. We checked with Ozzie (Newsome, the Ravens GM), and all the reports there seemed good, so we were reasonably comfortable with that.

Married with a 17-month-old son, Martin pledged to be active in the Green Bay community, pointing to his efforts in Baltimore. In 2007, he created the Derrick Martin Foundation, which aims to help children who are underprivileged and from single-parent homes.

But Martin expects his play on the field to say a lot about him, too, and hes looking forward to the chance to make new first impressions, beginning in practice on Monday morning.

I dont know anybody out here, Martin said. Once I come out on the field, its going to be the first time they see me, and hopefully, they like what they see.

Im going to give em a good show.

Seems like he made a big deal about the drug charge - to be honest I dont consider smoking a little weed a bad thing but to each his own. Glad to see he isnt into the drug scene thou.

And sounds like he wants to make an impact here and do what the team needs of him ie play safety, ST and maybe even corner.

Id like to think good things about the guy since he did replace smith whom I thought was good. And he is on our team. So I will be watching his play in the first few games.

Once again, Ted Thompson takes a piss on the conventional wisdom that he would never take a risk on a player with a questionable past.

What struck me most with my first impression of Derrick Martin (automatically typed Frost before I had to correct that) is that he's a family man. I find that typically people settle down and mature once they start a family. I think Martin will be fine in the attitude department. Can he play Green Bay Packers football though? We'll see soon.

The kids saying all the right things so far. Wondering if anyone knows where to find the details towards the money we should be saving from the whole deal (Martin's salary vs Moll's and the dropped Smith Salary). I know it's probably minor but I find these things interesting....

HaHa you and me both - thought I was alone with these thoughts here.

The guy just looks too thin; like he would break if he did a hard tackle.

He doesn't back down or let up though. I think he is going to be pretty good after a season or 2 in the weight room when he can get some muscle on those bones.

beast (9h) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (14h) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (14h) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (15h) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (15h) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (15h) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (15h) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (18h) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (18h) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here

Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round

Martha Careful (2-Aug) : Congratulations Sterling Sharpe. He was terrific and I loved watching him play.
beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
