I have to revive this topic. I'm in college now, and I am so homesick its not even funny. I keep saying "wow you really did it this time". I just miss my mom and sister, and my mom said my sister was crying and that just makes me depressed. Any advice??

It is hard. It will be a process. I have seen many Freshmen go home on weekends frequently. As the year goes on less and less and by their Soph year just for holidays.

I don't have any specific suggestions other than find ways to keep busy. School of course. Make friends . Join in activities. Meet girls.
Of course I am not implying that you party excessively or hang out with the wrong crowd or let your assignments not get the full effort they deserve.

I can't completely relate because honestly since I've been a little kid I've had no problems being away from my family. Evidently (because I was too young to actually remember it), the day before kindergarten my school had this deal where they took all the kids out to show them how the buses would work and some other school related stuff and so my mom dropped me off. Anyway, when I got back my parents asked me later on that night if I was worried going off on my own and my response was, "no, Mom's a big girl, she can take care of herself." Point being, I never felt homesick.

That said, I'm a Junior in college now and I remember very vividly the people who got homesick and went home a lot. Going home every weekend is a mistake. Flat out, you miss way too much. It's hard to make good friends when you aren't there to share experiences with the people you meet. On top of that, college is, and pardon this being cliche, one of the most exciting and fun times of your life. Don't waste it by not being there for as much of it as possible.

I'd suggest going home every once in awhile, maybe once or twice a month to start. But when school gets going and you get to know people better it will get easier and you should try to be at school pretty much always. You don't want to miss the experience. Besides, missing your family will be a whole lot more bearable if you have something meaningful and exciting at school.

Well, I'd actually defend community colleges. I went to 2 and got good education from both.

My mom teaches at a community college and says that while they don't have the budget most state universities have there teachers can have a real passion for what they're doing. I've had many classes at UWM where the teachers aren't interested in their students or in their subject, only their own studies and research which tends to make classes really boring. I don't take many lecture classes either because my major involves a lot of lab work.

Everyone here seems to have given great advice but I'd like to add one more important thing--communication. If you're having problems in class, communicate this to the teacher so you're both on the same page. By talking to your professors and letting them get to know you, they tend to be more lenient in cases where you may need extra time to work on an assignment.

EDIT: Ack, I apologize I failed to recognize that the post had been revived. As far as being homesick in college, I agree it is hard at first. I went from high school to college knowing absolutely no one and I had a single room in the dorms, so I was never forced to even try to make a friend. However, after being forced to spend a lot of time by myself I almost had to make friends or lose my sanity. It really isn't hard, especially at the time you're in--think about it. Everyone is in the same situation as you; new people, new experiences, living away from your family--everyone is looking to meet new people, so I suggest you try and do the same.

One thing that also helps keep me from being homesick is keeping a good line of communication open with my parents such as phone conversations (my mom keeps me on the phone for hours at a time) but it lets me know everything is ok at home while assuring them that I'm fine too.

Besides the freedom at college was amazing for me, although I admit I handled the responsibilities bad at first with partying but everyone has to pave their own road.

Im tryin to study hard so far, because of mistakes you mention of partying. I need to keep a 3.0 to keep my scholarship, and these classes are hard. I'm so stressed, miss my family, and need to get used to living with my music blasting roomate. I guess I should just keep pushin. I know I can't quit

beast (4h) : What is he supposed to say? He doesn't want players currently on the team?
Martha Careful (9h) : meh
Zero2Cool (13h) : Sounds like Walker and Wyatt will be with Packers for beyond 2026

Zero2Cool (19h) : If only we had a topic to read about and discuss it. That's something new website must have!!!
dfosterf (19h) : Justice Musqueda over at Acme Packing put up an excellent synopsis of the Packers 1st round options this am
wpr (19-Apr) : 5 days

wpr (17-Apr) : 7 days
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
