Do we have the depth in the DE line? Last few years we have had concerns of getting DE injured. We are running 3-4 now but we still need a power D Line. And did Dom Capers add 3-3-5 prowl to our Defense because I have not seen them use it yet?

ban please.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

While new and on probation a ban is not yet warranted. I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

Ted Thompson said last spring that good Defensive Linemen are difficult to find. There just aren't the free agents out there and teams do not trade those guys.

If you watched the games you are stating the obvious.

Remember that there is little depth on the line by definition. They will likely only carry 7 D linemen. 2 are rookies.

Raji will provide some depth and relief while he is learning this season.
Wynn has shown steady improvement.

Jolly, Pickett, and Montgomery will be free agents after this offseason.
The unit is in transisiton.

I'll go with Cali, then.

I wanted us to pick up Vonnie Holliday quite badly, but after seeing our D-line perform, I'm not that worried anymore. Johnny Jolly is a great back-up. He's been lights out this pre-season. Montgomery has been solid so far, as long as he doesn't have to get to the QB (Like in a 3-4), I think that he'll be ok. And Wynn, although undersized, did show a lot of potential.

As to the 1-5-5, we played that quite a bit in last weeks game. Worked pretty good, as well.

Just a quick update so it doesn't keep getting discussed again and again.. we are addressing the many new threads by the originator and being dealt with.

Some new folks here are getting their feet wet for the first time on the forums.. fitting into a community sometimes takes adjustments.

As far as the topic discussion Cheese.. ya nailed it as well.. we might be shy on depth at the moment with Harrell not being part of the solution.. but Jolly's play to date has easied some of those concerns..

We now have.. Jenkins, Pickett, Raji, and Jolly looking like front line guys.

Monty will bring what Monty always brings.. a flash here and there and stable. Wynn looks like he could play in a pinch..

I think we will see Teddy scouring the cut downs for practice squad dlineman as he normally does.. then a late season call up if needed.

I personally am at more ease with seeing Jolly having a big camp and preseason.. 4 front line rotational guys for three spots is okay.

I would be much more comfortable if Harrell was able to play, and I knew Jolly would be around the entire season for certain.

I think there is enough, but it wouldn't take much to knock the depth down.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Seeing as they will likely keep 6, i think they have pretty good depth. This is how i see it playing out:

Picket(great)
Jenkins(great)
Jolly(good, has been playing better than expected)
Raji(good, should be great)
Wynn(potential to be good)
Montgomery if healthy(decent, maybe a bit undersized, but he's #6 on the depth chart in a 3 man position)

I know its easy to get caught up in last year, but if you look at it objectively:
1. Last year we needed 4 Dline players on every down. This year we will run formations that require, 1, 2, or 3 Dline players most of the time(i see more 2-4-5 than 4-2-5 as has been reported, they keep 4 LBs in for nickle packages) so the need to have 9 or 10 guys isnt there.

2. 2 linemen from last year are now OLBs in kamp and thompson. Thats one GREAT player still out there, and one part time starter last year/potential starter this year in thompson. This means that in nickle, your DE's are essentially your OLBs, and you've got 6 guys to rotate in at that DT spot.

3. So looking at all of this, with a max of 3 guys on the field at once, and likey 50%+ of the time less than 3(sub-packages), why you would need more than six guys? Sure half of them could go down, but that is a good arguement for not having depth *anywhere* on the team.

Having said all of that, i see them stashing a DE type player on the practice squad. Someone like Ronald Talley who has gotten some 2nd team reps.

I think they could go with only 6 DL and with harrell being one of those 6.

Yes I think they would like to keep 7 DL but the talent just isn't there and I don't want to cut another position where the talent is.

keep the practice squad filled with some DL and go with 5 plus Harrell. The rumor is Harrell can play but they just aren't doing it until the season starts and he can only play a limited number of snaps.

Still waiting on the reply did Capers add 3-3-5 prowl to the packers defensive playbook? I don't know if you guys know this but in a 3-3-5 prowl everyone is standing up even the D line. That could be fun to see.

beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.

beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
