Patriots LB Bruschi retiring after 13 seasons

By HOWARD ULMAN, AP Sports Writer

BOSTON (AP)Tedy Bruschi is retiring after a 13-year career marked by an inspiring return to the New England Patriots as a starting linebacker eight months after a stroke.

A person familiar with his decision told The Associated Press on Sunday night that the 36-year-old Bruschi will announce his retirement at a news conference Monday morning. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made.

The team declined to comment Sunday night and called a news conference for an important player announcement Monday morning.

Bruschi, an inside linebacker, played on all three Super Bowl-winning Patriots teams. The last championship game was on Feb. 6, 2005, against the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in his only Pro Bowl on Feb. 13.

He recovered to play nine of the last 10 games that season, all starts, and was named The AP Comeback Player of the Year.

Bruschis play declined last season and he missed much of this years training camp for undisclosed reasons.

His impending retirement was first reported by NBC.

A third-round draft choice out of Arizona in 1996, Bruschi worked his way up from a part-time player and member of special teams units to full-time starter in 1999.

Ive had so many years (when) where you are in September is different than where you are in December, Bruschi said last week. So Ive learned that ever since I was a third-down situational pass-rushing rookie that played on special teams all the way through my entire career, never assume what your role is going to be. Just be ready when your coach calls on you.

Bruschi played sparingly in the Patriots three exhibition games. He sat out the first game then played against Cincinnati in the second.

Obviously, hes a very experienced player and knowing what to do and all of that isnt a huge issue after missing many training camp practices, coach Bill Belichick said after that game. But timing and recognition and reaction times and all of that, thats something that you cant train for. Youve got to be out there and experience it on the field with your teammates.

Last season, the Patriots drafted Jerod Mayo at inside linebacker in the first round and he became the NFL defensive rookie of the year. Gary Guyton, a free agent rookie last season, also developed at that position.

This offseason, the Patriots obtained former Detroit Lions inside linebacker Paris Lenon as a free agent. New England lost its second most experienced linebacker last February when it traded outside linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bruschi has played in 189 regular-season games, more than any linebacker in club history. His 631 total tackles over the past six seasons are the most on the team in that period.

Early this summer, Bruschi said he wasnt thinking what he would do after the coming season.

After you get past 10 (NFL seasons), I think thats the way you have to do it because you never know whats going to happen within a year. You just dont, he said June 30 during a football clinic he ran for 67 youngsters at Gillette Stadium. So when the seasons over, you sort of reassess things and thats how its going to go again.

He ran a highly organized program that day in which youngsters took part in various drills.

I know I can coach, he said then. I know the game. Ive been in it so long, its just going to be a matter of what I do when Im done (playing). So I dont know. Its a passion of mine. I love football. I know I want to be in it. Lets just see what Ill be doing.

Last season, his 75 tackles were his second fewest in six seasons, more than the 65 he had when he played nine games in 2005 after his stroke. He had no sacks for the first time in his 13 seasons. And he missed the last three games with a knee injury.

He almost certainly will be remembered most for his comeback from the stroke. He had surgery to repair a hole in his heart and, as he got better, kept working out and attending team meetings.

On Oct. 30 that year Bruschi started at inside linebacker at home and made 10 tackles in a 21-16 win over the Buffalo Bills.

To not give it a shot was something that would have eaten me up five, 10 years down the road, he said then. So I was like, Lets just do it now and not wait because Ive been cleared to do it.

I don't mince any of my thoughts or opinions of the jagoff that coaches the Patriots.. but Bruschi is a hell of a player and IMO has shown a ton of class in his playing days.

Enjoy retirement from the playing surface... but we will see you again around the game. Personally.. I think he will be a Kevin Greene type in the next several years.. leaping for joy for his players on the field.

Yes, I've always pulled for Bruschi, despite the fact he was on one of my least favorite teams in the league. His amazing comeback was inspiring, almost more dramatic than Harris' return last year. I still find it scary that a man can have a stroke in the prime of his life. It's sobering to realize none of us has any guarantees from moment to moment. Best wishes to Bruschi in ret irement, and I agree with Pack that we'll probably be seeing him on the sidelines or in the booth in the not-too-distant future.

Every team needs one, very few teams actually get theirs. What an amazing stable force for that defense for so long. Any team will be lucky to get his understanding of the game on the sidelines and in the practice rooms.

Class act of a guy. Seems like he'd be good in a booth, or on TV somewhere.

It's going to be weird to not see him on the field. He's been playing as long as I've been a fan of the game.

His comeback from the stroke was really inspirational!

Zero2Cool (15m) : Packers have signed first-round pick Matthew Golden, leaving second-round tackle Anthony Belton as their only unsigned draft pick
beast (6h) : Supposedly he has to take his image, and name off of it... but otherwise could keep selling wine if he wanted to.
Zero2Cool (7h) : he giving up his win business?
beast (16h) : Speaking of Woodson, sounds like he'll be a minority owner (0.1%) of the Browns
Mucky Tundra (15-May) : Zero, regarding Woodson, that'd why I find the timing with Williams peculiar
dfosterf (15-May) : Ryan Hall y'all does a great job of tracking thesr
Zero2Cool (15-May) : Fear not!! I planned to do 33mi bike ride tomorrow morning, so ... yeah

Zero2Cool (15-May) : Madison they had hail 4pm.
dfosterf (15-May) : Sure looks like these tornadoes are headed towards Green Bay
Zero2Cool (15-May) : Woodson of Charles fame was reluctant and then loved it. that didn't really come out until post career
Mucky Tundra (15-May) : IE "We bought into the Bears and they let us down, we have no choice to seek alternatives"
Mucky Tundra (15-May) : Or that Williams and his family are preparing an exit ramp if they don't like how things are going in a few years
Mucky Tundra (15-May) : Either Williams thought it would make him look good (reluctant but then embraces the city and franchise)
Mucky Tundra (15-May) : I can only assume that the Williams camp agreed to cooperate with that article tells me 2 things
dfosterf (15-May) : Ya. They are in a great mood
Zero2Cool (15-May) : I should visit again
dfosterf (15-May) : ChiCity Sports entering freakout mode due to Caleb and his dad not wanting him to go there
Zero2Cool (15-May) : "He's looking really good out there," Derrick Ansley said of Kalen King. Adds that he's been playing inside and out.
Zero2Cool (15-May) : Him saying he doesn't have one to give haha
Zero2Cool (15-May) : True, that was awesome. The whole F thing was great actually.
dfosterf (15-May) : I did like the Mark Murphy part, sorta
Zero2Cool (15-May) : Some comments on it saying it was great, amazing... I came away thinking... awkward.

buckeyepackfan (14-May) : Week 1
buckeyepackfan (14-May) : Packers Host Detroit Week 1! ML finally gets a week home opener.
beast (13-May) : I was kind of hoping Douglas might come back to the Pack
beast (13-May) : My question is how much do we trust Jenkins? In bad weather, he seemed to struggle a bit with ball control snapping, though he started at OG
beast (13-May) : Well Jenkins probably knows he's not getting that 2026 salary number without a new contact... so just trying to get the new contact early
Zero2Cool (13-May) : CB Rasul Douglas is visiting the #Seahawks today, per source.
dfosterf (13-May) : He's a switch and baiter. Its the same as a bait and switcher except he agreed to the switch first lol
dfosterf (13-May) : 6.8 mil raise next year. Those are existing contract numbers
dfosterf (13-May) : 12.8 plus 4.8 pro rata signing bonus is 17.6 mil. Top center in the league at 18
Zero2Cool (13-May) : Elgton Jenkins wants to rework contract ahead of position change to center
Zero2Cool (13-May) : 🏈Monday, Nov. 10: Eagles at Packers
buckeyepackfan (12-May) : Packers @ Bears week 16(Saturday Game)
Zero2Cool (12-May) : Clifford hasn't been the same since losing 8
dfosterf (12-May) : Sean Clifford would probably disagree
