Vick - funded a dog fighting ring - 23 months
Stallworth - driving while under the influence fatally struck a jaywalking pedestrian - a few weeks
Burress - carrying a loaded weapon in the most gun strict state, shot himself - 20 months (sentencing on 9/22/09)

I think when we are looking at these three men and their cases, we need to inject their intent.

Vick - no real clue to be honest, make money? either way it was to profit off cruelty to animals, not right at all
Stallworth - i believe he never intended on hurting anyone
Burress - not sure why you would carry a loaded weapon if you didn't intend on using it

I think ...

Vick was slightly over punished. I love dogs and what he did was completely wrong, but im ignorant to the specifics of the depths of his involvement.

Stallworth should have sat at least a year, however it should be noted he did everything right AFTER the accident. He called 911, he took responsibility for it, he spoke with the family and did not lie.

Burress - i believe he lied from the start, the hospital aided his secrecy in some degree, he also used a fake name and did not own up to it from the get go.

All three are bad, but all three are very different when you get into the details. I think most are just looking at the outline of the crime and the end result, the punishment and trying to compare them.

I have said my piece on Vick. I just hate when anyone uses the word "mistake". I have moved on from that one. Consider dfoster in the forgive but not forgot camp.

Stallworth--- No intent. Stupid. He is paying. I have no argument with anything that has transpired.

Plaxico-- Incredibly stupid. I'm a 2nd amendment guy, but that is boyz in the hood shit. He is paying for his incredible stupidity and the fact that we have a society. In a club packin' where alcohol is served in NYC is not having your .270 on a gun rack in the pick-up grabbin' a beer after seeing a UFO (karaoke with the actual facts, Alan-you understand, lol) in Northern Wisconsin. He pays for the other morons there.

I think these guys should've all gotten a pretty even punishment, say, around 1 year in jail.

I also have nothing more to say on Vick.

I'm probably the only person in America who still thinks drunk-driving laws have gone overboard.

And, yes, before people go ballistic on me, I, too, have had friends who have died because of drunk drivers. I've had friends die from lots of unfair and bad things. But a society that demands "the criminal justice system" redress every wrong, even every wrong that ends in death, is a society that has lost its way, and one that no longer understands the limitations of legislation and adjudication. And one that has forgotten the value in separating "civil" (wrongs against persons and property) and "criminal" (wrongs against "society").

IMO, what Stallworth did was a civil wrong, not a criminal one. I think the heirs of the victim should be able to sue the crap out him; but I think DAs and criminal defense attorneys have more important things to be doing.

Some day, if I live long enough, I'm going to do an empirical study on the social cost of enforcing and policing drunk driving laws. But in the meantime I expect no one at all to agree with me. So be it.

As for Burress, I've already spoken in another thread. Burress was a bonehead. And the law of the case is an ass.

Dude really? If you're caught driving drunk it's my opinion that you should have your license revoked IMMEDIATELY. Jail time is another thing. I don't really think you should go to jail for being caught driving drunk, but you should definitely lose the privilege of driving. Trust me, I'm in my fourth year of college I see this shit go down ALL THE TIME. I have never done it myself though because it makes no sense to me.

i try to avoid dui arguments because they fire me up ALOT! went thru alot of things because of drunk drivers & i have to say that the tougher prosecutors are on them the FIRST time, the better. i'm not saying throw them in jail on the first offense but make it hurt - badly - and they just might think about it the next time they're sittin in a bar gettin wasted with their keys in their hand.

a vehicle IS a weapon - put it in the hands of a drunk & kaboom!!!
