Green Bay - Coach Mike McCarthy said defensive tackle Justin Harrell missed Tuesday's morning practice with back spasms that are related to his chronic back problems.

"He's just fighting through it and we're just treating it," McCarthy said. "So it's a little bit of a setback for him."

This is the third consecutive season Harrell has dealt with injuries since being taken 16th overall in 2007.

He did not participate in off-season workouts before his rookie season as he recovered from surgery to repair the bicep he tore in college. The Packers then brought him along slowly until he was finally active for a game on Oct. 7.

In '08, Harrell injured his back in off-season practices and underwent two surgeries. He was active for the first time on Nov. 2 but then missed the final three games with a hip injury that was related to his back problems.

Harrell thought his back issues were behind him this year after seeing an acupuncture specialist in the Green Bay area.

"On a personal note it's unfortunate," McCarthy said. "Justin's had a tough road dealing with his injuries but he's doing everything and more that we're asking of him. It's part of the game. It's something that as a coach you can't control."

:xcensoredx:

Oh well. I'm sure the coaches really weren't counting on him to be healthy this year. Any playing time this year is a bonus.

It's getting old. It is too bad for him though... really unfortunate that his body just can't take it.

This is compounded by the missing Raji, Jolly, and the reluctance to sign some veteran depth along the defensive line.

I am sure the Teddy won't rely on Harrell and will add some protection in depth if the answer isn't on the roster at the moment.. but I can't help but think back to last years ill fated decision to hold out hope on KGB and Harrell only to be disappointed in the end.

On a related note, Carter and Holiday's tires were kicked by the Patriots in the past couple days.. not that they are a long term answer, but maybe short term insurance.

Jenkins - hows his ankle/pec?
Harrell - hmmm great (time to dump and pick up carter for a year or 2 contract
Jolly - hmmm decent but legal issues
Raji - ya sure kid miss this weeks practice
Pickett - least I dont have anything to say about him

D line is pretty important for a 3-4

you stole my thunder 93z...i don't know how well they would do in a
3-4 since I don't know if either could play the NT (at least not vonnie) but any way we could add depth seems appropriate discussion at this point.

Just to be fair there are other options on the roster.. but proven players we are short on in this scenario if Harrell's back keeps him out. Not that he is proven anything though.. lol.

sucks for Justin. If he has another year like last year (and the year before that), you've gotta assume his career is as good as over. C'mon Justin, get healthy! STAY HEALTHY!
