After watching him in "coverage" against Chester Taylor in the VIkings game last year i'm not sure If I want to see him on the field again anytime soon, still makes my stomach churn seeing that play.

I don't look at that play so critically because they had just put him in the game and he was about one step out of position there. That happens when you don't play a whole lot and haven't gotten in in the flow of the game.

It was actually a good call by the OC there to put Bishop out there one on one with Taylor having just come into the game.

Yeah, it was a good call, and very well executed. Bishop at least slowed Taylor down a bit by forcing a juke move and some changed angles, but even after his ankles were broken 1 on 1 there weren't any other defenders around to make a play.

I've liked Bishop since preseason of his rookie year when he blasted some guys helmet off. Still, I don't think he'll be starting.

Desmond is a thumper man, hopefully he flourishes and the Pack have one of the deepest LB core in the league

Then there was an awful lot of sour tastes in your mouth last season.. the man up coverage every stinking play by the backers was a recipe for getting played like a drum.. and that drum beat often against Poppinga, Barnett, Hawk.. Chillar was the only one somewhat equipped to play that coverage...

I too like Bishops nastiness - but besides that he doesn't have much else going for him.

Yes Zone should help him with some of his (lack of) speed, but the point of zone is to drop into the passing lanes to disrupt the QB. That means Bishop will have to read and react based on what the receiver in his area is doing. If Bishop's any good at being able to analyze and use his instincts, he'll have the ability to not just get into passing lanes but jump routes - namely the underneath stuff that should occur frequently if our rushes get home. God help us if the pressure doesn't get home because then Bishop will be a huge liability. I just question if Bishop has the instincts and smarts to be able to do some of the things that are the benefit of zone coverage - anticipating (and even jumping) routes.

Also, if there are concerns about Nick Barnett's ability to play in this defense as a result of his inability to shed blockers, then the same should apply to Bishop. Yes Bishop has the body to play the position, but my goodness he's almost as bad as Abdul Hodge was at shedding blockers.

What Bishop does have going for him though is great instincts that allow him to find gaps in the trenches and go through them to make plays on the ball. He's a hell of a hitter too, which is great. But his overall game needs a lot of work.

I'm much more excited about Chillar. The dude can ball; I think he should be considered ahead of Bishop because of what he brings: ability to cover TEs AND the ability to bring the pressure home. Chillar is an underrated player all around - I would not be surprised if he ends up seeing the bulk of the snaps at one of the ILB positions week 1.

Some of his quotes:

What on earth are you talking about? Chillar was far below average as a starter for the Rams, and he was awful during his short starting stint with Green Bay. The Rams cut him last year, and the Packers picked him up during the season.

He is terrible in coverage. Look at his stat line against the Saints this year, a game in which Chillar single-handedly made Drew Brees a 5000-yard passer. He had 0 INTs, 0 passes defensed, and 10 solo tackles! Meaning he managed to tackle the receiver 10 times after he caught it.

The only thing Chillar has going for him in pass coverage is his height. He is not athletic, he evidently was very confused by the Packers cover schemes in that he had no idea where his help was coming from, and he is absolutely horrendous in man-to-man coverage.

Florida...Bishop was thrown in cold, was asked to play man, and got caught off guard. Shit happens. Now, he will be in the mix if not a starter, get more reps, and will be asked to drop into zone in such situations...much more appropriate for a LB in coverage than man.

Now...remember the hits and the forced fumble. Dude can play, and he is a mean mofo. Let it roll, Desmond!

AADP - Chillar is going to shine in this defense. He was our best backer last year...even when Barnett has healthy. I look forward to big things from him. In my mind, if Barnett gets healthy, and shows he can play, he is trade bait on the upcoming off-season.

Wow, 10 solo tackles means he tackled a guy 10 times after he caught the ball? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think tackling the running back also counts.

I'll have to somehow train myself not to miss the samurai celebration after a routine play. The thing that has always bugged me about Barnett is his lack of game changing plays. Don't get me wrong, he's a solid, talented linebacker; just nothing worth a trip to Hawaii for. Maybe it has to do with the D list of coordinators he's played under. Anyway, he's damaged goods now, I'm not going to cry if he's moved.
