1. Aaron Rodgers looks locked, loaded and ready to fire. The Packers quarterback now looks completely comfortable in his own skin as the team's second-year starter, and with the drama of the messy transition from Brett Favre to Rodgers a year into the past, I have the feeling he is headed for some pretty big things in 2009. Rodgers won a lot of loyalty from his teammates last year, for not only handling the Favre saga with grace, but also for playing through the a second-degree shoulder separation midseason and not missing a game. Green Bay's 6-10 record partly obscured the fact that Rodgers finished with 4,038 yards passing and 28 touchdowns as a first-time starter.

3. Keep an eye on Jermichael Finley. If there's a surprise success story on the Packers' roster, more than a few folks would list the second-year tight end from Texas as the leading candidate. Veteran Donald Lee isn't about to be eclipsed in the starting lineup, but the thinking is that Finley just scratched the surface last year with his 39 receptions for 303 yards. A couple Packers' players mentioned the 6-5, 247-pound Finley to me, and none of them sounded more excited about his potential to improve the passing game than Rodgers.

Maybe it's just because this year is fresh but it seems like we have a lot more excitement depth-wise this year as far as competition for certain positions than we did last year. It is hard to remember anything about the offseason last year besides the Favre crap but I think it's a good thing that we have so much competition now and I expect there to be a couple surprises. šŸ™‚

I love articles like this. Nevermind that they write them about almost every team in training camp. They still get me fired up.

Banks made a good point, I thought, about how the zone defense could actually benefit Al Harris by saving some wear and tear on his 34-year-old legs.

There was one big error, though. Jermichael Finley did not have 39 receptions for 303 yards. That was Donald Lee. Finley had 6 catches for 74 yards. Just a slight difference.

See i can post positive things lol. I think the competition thing is mostly on defense because everyone is on the same playing field and can't really fall back on previous years to save them. None of them played in a 3-4 so it could be very interesting.

Can we please, for the LOVE OF GOD, stop mentioning the name of Rodgers' predecessor every time we mention Rodgers himself?

Jesus, media wonks, get a clue already!

Overall, good read, and I'm happy that Finley seems to be coming into his own.

It won't happen Nonstop.

To this day baseball announcers will say that "Edgar Renteria had the game winning hit for the FL Marlins in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series."

That was 12 years ago. Hasn't he done ANYTHING since then? When he played for St Louis and they were the game of the week they said it every time. Even if it was the same announcers and it was only a week later. Boy did it get annoying.

Back to the topic, I expect Finley to show improvement this year and more so next year. A lot of the draft experts felt he come out of school 1 year too soon so last year was a wasted... well we will call it a learning year. This year he should be a little more prepared to play in the NFL. I guess GB paid him a little more than TX was willing to pay him.

I understand what you mean, but in this case I think you need to lighten up a bit. The fact is Aaron Rodgers' success thus far is inexplicably intertwined with his handling of the Favre situation. I agree with you that Favre's name needn't be uttered every time (or even most times) when speaking about Rodgers, but in an article that focuses to some extent on his growth from last season, it's almost impossible to not mention his classy (and effective) handling of the Favre fiasco.

Like I said, I understand what you're saying. In this instance, though, I don't think the author was out of line.
