WR Jones Back To His Old Self

by Mike Spofford, Packers.com
posted 07/06/2009

The old adage says NFL players make their biggest strides from their first year to their second, and receiver James Jones was on track to do just that in 2008.

In the midst of an impressive sophomore training camp, Jones began the preseason with that memorable touchdown catch on national television against Cincinnati, when he absorbed a big hit over the middle, lost his helmet, and stayed on his feet to run into the end zone.

By early in the third quarter of the third preseason game at Denver, Jones already had seven receptions, second on the team at that point to Donald Driver.

It looked as though topping his impressive rookie numbers of 47 catches for 676 yards would be a matter of course in Jones' second year out of San Jose State. But it wasn't to be.

In the second half of that game against Denver, Jones sprained his right knee. Not thought to be a serious injury at the time, that knee became a source of angst all season long for Jones and the Packers.

"Stressful, frustrating, all those big words," Jones said. "All those words you can imagine."

Simply put, Jones' knee was never quite right. Whether he pushed too hard to come back too fast or underestimated the severity of the injury, or both, the bottom line was Jones couldn't perform the way he and the coaching staff expected him to, and - strange as it may sound - his inexperience with being injured played a factor.

"It was something he had never experienced, and he had problems with it," receivers coach Jimmy Robinson said. "I think it was tough on him mentally, and it kind of changed him as a person a little bit, and he'd say the same, because of not having really been hurt at any level, Pop Warner all the way through college."

Jones missed the first game of the season but came back to make four catches, including a TD reception, in Week 2 at Detroit. But then in Week 3 against Dallas, he caught a pass on the first series of the game, banged his knee on the turf and was done for the night.

That made it hard for the coaching staff to trust that he could be counted on to play an entire game, and he was inactive for four of the next five contests, catching just one pass in Week 5 against Atlanta.

"It frustrated him, the fact that he could never get it right," Robinson said. "Every time he went back out there he'd seem to have a relapse or something where he landed on his knee again and it felt funny or went dead on him. It was a whole new thing for him to experience, and we're hoping, he is more than anybody, that that's all behind him."

Jones started to put it behind him toward the end of last season. After being inactive one final time at New Orleans in Week 13, Jones caught at least two passes in each of the final five games to finish the season with 20 receptions for 274 yards.

His redemptive performance came in Week 15 at Jacksonville, when he had catches of 46, 40 and 34 yards, by far his three longest of the season. He finished that game with four receptions for 132 yards, a career high and his second career 100-yard game.

Thus far, Jones seems to have carried over his strong finish into 2009. Declaring himself fully healthy for the offseason program, Jones didn't miss any on-field time during OTAs or mini-camp and looked like he was back to his old self, using his 6-foot-1, 208-pound frame to shield defenders from the ball and make tough catches over the middle.

"I'm healthy now so I'm just going out there trying to get back to myself and make the plays that I know I can make and just have fun," Jones said.

"Last year was rough. I really couldn't play like myself all year. It really is a fresh start. I'm healthy and all that again, just going out there getting a feel for it, making some plays. Running around finally without any pain feels good."

With Greg Jennings and Driver entrenched as the top two wideouts, Jones and second-year pro Jordy Nelson should stage an intriguing battle for the No. 3 spot. Nelson took advantage of Jones' down time last season and put up some impressive rookie numbers of his own, catching 33 passes for 366 yards and two touchdowns.

Whether he becomes the third or fourth receiver in the rotation this year, Jones is by no means a finished product. He didn't fully progress in his second season because of the injury, so some of those second-year strides should come this year, along with a bit more polish to his game.

"He's a big body, and he's a very, very strong, physically well-built guy for the position," Robinson said. "He's got rare strength for that position, and he's got great hands. James has as good a (pair of) hands as anybody I've seen. He's got to combine that with the focus and the route-running and the little things that go into making you a complete receiver."

Provided he stays healthy, Jones should be able to do that. If he sustains another injury, he'll in all likelihood be better equipped to handle it now. But obviously the goal is to not have to deal with injuries at all, and like any player, that's when Jones can be at his best.

"I haven't seen any indication that he's not totally back to normal and totally healthy and ready to take up where he left off when he got hurt," Robinson said. "I think he's a man with a mission right now to prove that last year was not him."

Ha!

That is probably the most that has been written about Jones' injury.

I anticipate that this is going to be one of those "pleasant surprises" we all like to get.

I, for one, will not be surprised at all if he goes out and lights it up for us.

Crabtree my ass.

I have a real problem here, because I really like Jorde Nelson as a cerebral wideout with all the tools. I love Jones as well, many here have said "Sterling Sharpe-esque".

How in the hell can all these guys reach their potential when the forever young Donald Driver never declines.

We're in good hands at the wide receiver position.

I am one of those who throws around "Sterling Sharpe-esque" when describing Jones' game. Great hands, and the first defender is more often than not muscled off for additional yards.

I think one thing Ted Thompson learned from Ron Wolf is that you surround your QB with plenty of high-end weapons. Wolf has stated he laments not providing our former, future HOF, QB with enough weapons.

Yep, that's right...his name no longer crosses my lips!! Enjoy your time in the Twin Shitties...not.

I think this is the area that catches all the experts and forecasters off guard or they are just to lazy to do the homework. I am talking about teams with players that are in a position to make a greater impact than they did in the past.

I look at it as two catagories. Veterans that have proven what they can do and their productivity can pretty much be anticipated and, secondly, younger players moving into a position to create a greater impact and help the team.

For example, we have the Kampmans, Barnetts, Hawks, Picketts, Jenkins', Harris, Woodsons, Cliftons', Jennings, Drivers, etc., who we know pretty much what to expect.

The other catagory is what you get out of players like Sitton, Finley, Barber, Geno, Jones, Jordy, Thompson, and a few others. The benefits of building thru the draft is what you get out of players who have had a chance to learn, get stronger, and are better prepared to contribute in a positive way.

Because of the way Thompson goes about his business is why a team like the Packers can rise up and surprise the league because they emphasis growth in this way and have MORE PLAYERS in the catagory of now being better prepared to contribute more than in the past.

I look at the Bears and the Vikes and see they will both be starting an OL they had previously drafted but I am not convinced either player will make their OL's better. The Vikes also look to be starting rookie Loadholdt at RT and he will be liability in pass blocking where he wasn't very good there in college so they may be showing a little kink in the armour along the OL where they have been very good in the past.

Nor do I see players from past drafts prepared to step in and make positive contributions to help those teams improve in any given area whereas I see the Sitton/Spitz combo strengthening the interior of our OL and guys like Finley, Nelson, and Jones, making our offense stronger.

Our passing offense is going to be scary good this year. Jordy and Finley will make the 2nd year improvement jump, as will Jones (who's second year was robbed by injury).

Rodgers did some nice things last year with a rookie Nelson, not much from James Jones and an under performing Ryan Grant. Imagine what he could do if everyone clicks. Jones and Nelson are going have a field day against #4 CBs .

I just hope that Ryan Grant breaks through this season.

It would be amazing if he and Brandon Jackson, Lumpkin, or Sutton could share carries and we could have a smash and dash kind of running game. (Think Tennessee, hopefully.)

And of course if our OL is better, we will have a kick ass offense.

If all of the above works, we should be great.

Now, back on topic. James Jones is going to have a great career ahead of him, especially once Donald Driver retires. I love his physicality and his great hands.

I also like Jordy Nelson. He will be a great slot wide receiver, IMO. Hopefully to the likes of Wes Welker.

Throw Donald Driver in that mix and we have one of the strongest receiving cores in the league.

I think Driver is already becoming our primary slot man. A lot of his catches last year were down the middle of the field. He's got the physicality to deal with safeties and linebackers.

This year I think Jones and Jennings may get more action out wide, with Nelson popping up all over the place.

I don't think that Jordy will ever develop into someone in the mold of a Wes Welker. He's not that kind of receiver to me. I do think that he'll be a great slot receiver. Just not a 110 receptions one. I think that he's able to get the ball further down the field than he did this year. There where a lot of 7 yard outs and 5 yard curl routes in the playbook for him, but he showed some great speed and potential on fly routes to me.

Anyway, back to James Jones. I think that he might be more of the natural Nr. 1/2 receiver. I think that Jordy and James will split some time in the slot while Driver is still on the team and then when he retires, Jones will be the Nr. 2 and Nelson will be in the slot. That is, if he does stay healthy.

Right NOW Driver is our slot. But what I was trying to get at was that when he retires, Nelson will be the slot man.

I still think Nelson will see the slot some this year.

TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (10-Feb) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
