I'm against paying a backup role player the kind of money Poppinga is getting. I don't have anything against him, but if he isn't starting, then he needs to go.

I agree with this.. but is 1.9 really an absorbent amount of money for a veteran player?

Personally.. I won't have resigned him at that contract... and I said that it at that point.. but sometimes paying on potential bites you.. here it did.

Poppingas 08 cap was $4M, and I don't know the rest of it becasue X4 doesn't let me in to lurk anymore and you don't get of your ass to create a cap page for us.

I think his contract was for 4 years 17 Million.

That's too much for a backup.

I think this is a joke.... just a reporter trying to make a story. I think it's stupid to talk about cutting someone for money when the team isn't having problems with money. I mean the Packers kept KGB even though he was a back-up and he cost what 4 times as much?

As long as he's good enough to make the roster he's going to make the roster.... at least as long as he's going to be a part of say the top 45 top 48 guys... their are some spots left for up and coming players.

Beast, don't you think that an overpaid player causes dissention. We as fans might think it isn't a big deal, but I bet in that locker room, there's a problem. It's basic human nature.

It depends.... do you have professions or money grabbing whores?

now I think every teams has some of both but I think the Packers have more professions than most teams. But are you gonna keep the best players? Or the ones making money when you don't have a money problem. I'd take the better player...

plus Poppinga has been a veteran leader... just ask Hawk. Not only that but do we know if his contract is based on incentive or not? I know Chillar contract is based on incentives which is something reporters don't watch... they just talk about the max amount possible.

What reason is there to cut Poppinga other than he's making more than you would like? If you cut someone just for the money your making a statement to the players get your money not because you maybe cut if your making too much... that's a bad message.

So in other words it's a bad massage ether way. So it comes down which is worse? I think saying you'll be cut if you make too much even though your one of the better players is a worse massage. PLUS... cutting a player that can help the team is stupid unless they have problems which Poppinga has no problems off the field.

The only other reason to cut Poppinga is that he would be taking PT from Matthews and Thompson. I do like our depth, but I remember thinking that Brady's contract was a little steep when it was announce.

I'm just a tight ass I guess. I do like Poppinga.

Well seeing that Thompson and Matthews are on the right side and Poppinga is on the left that may not be true.

Also the coaches are smart and will put in the players that is best for the situation. Like no way Poppinga could cover like Matthews. But I'm not sure ether of them are as good at run stopping as Poppinga (yes I know Thompson is bigger and was a DE but Poppinga is seems to be better as handling linemen... then again he was in the open and Thompson wasn't)

But they all have there different skill set.

Poppinga probably stays on the team because of his value on special teams. The Packers special teams was awful last year and they'll need a player like Poppinga to kind of anchor it. I don't think his roster spot is in jeopardy. The other young backers such as Brad Jones will have to show a lot for that to happen and I can't see that happening at the moment.

Who wants to pay a special teams player millions of dollars in a down economy? I sincerely doubt he'll make the team unless he proves his value as a linebacker, not just a special teamer.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
