Poppinga On Roster Bubble?

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on June 30, 2009 8:46 PM

The generous contract Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga signed last offseason could put his roster spot in jeopardy this year.

Poppinga was a starter when he signed his deal, but he's a clear backup in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense. Poppinga is set to make $1.9 million in base salary, and Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press Gazette wonders if the team wants to pay a role player that much.

Poppinga was asked at Green Bay's recent minicamp asked if his salary will put his job at risk.

"That's something you'd have to ask the front office. I don't know how they budget things out."

Poppinga's predicament is an example of the difficulties inherent in changing defensive schemes. Both the player and the contract have to fit into the new system.

I think he could be a valuable backup at the OLB position. Maybe even play some ILB. It would be nice if he would take a pay cut... 🙂

Why not just trade him for a depth or special team player?

i persomally would never make a trade for a player who may be cut. I'd rather wait till the guy was cut, then bring him in.

You are 100% right on that.
NO team will be dumb enough to trade for him if they know he's in the situation that he will probably be cut.
The only way you get something is if someone REALLY likes him, and wants to make SURE they get him. But what they give up won't be anything of real value.

Alls I got to say is I hope what they are doing with players and spots works. ie seems like they are equipping ST with alot of athletes ie linebackers and such ...

We sucked at ST last year and stopping the run and russing the passer. Like to see this changed.

First.. this is the writers taking an angle and running with it because he has a decent salary and isn't in line at the moment for a starting spot...

IMO.. we will keep 8 to 10 Backers on the roster this season.. at least two deep at every spot.. one of the youngin's would have to "bring it" for Thompson and MM to feel comfortable letting Poppinga walk or move him..

Personally I think Poppinga takes a ton of bad angles on the playing field and gets himself into poor body position spots... for as smart as the guy seems it doesn't seem to carry over to the football field.. either that or he has some of the worst instincts I have seen in a Linebacker on the current roster..

I'm against paying a backup role player the kind of money Poppinga is getting. I don't have anything against him, but if he isn't starting, then he needs to go.

I had the same problem with KGB, he was not a full time player and I felt he was overpaid.

I just believe that overpaying a backup player would create dissention, especially for guys like Collins, Kampmann, and College who are seeking their next contract and are full time starters.

If Brady doesn't start, then he should be asked to take a renegotiated contract, which would pay him appropriately.

Brady was drafted because he had a motor that would not stop and was supposed to be able to get pressure on the qb.

it never happened, and he is a flat out liability in coverage. I agree, it is time to cut the cord and go in a younger direction.

Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
