I wonder if this is skill set driven or him desperately trying to hang onto a roster spot.. with the numbers at LBer.. I think the odds of him hanging with that group is slim.

Source of course...

Havner at TE

Spencer Havner switched over from linebacker to tight end and will be there through the minicamp. Then he'll switch between the two positions in training camp. The last time he played both ways was in high school, but he played tight end on the Packers' scout team last year.

"They're just trying to find an opportunity for me to possibly make the team," Havner said. "They have a lot of linebackers, so . . . They came to me Thursday about it. I was excited about it. I just wanted to make sure it was for the right reasons and I think it was. It's hopefully just about giving me an opportunity to be a core special teams player and be a backup linebacker and tight end."

Hmm... good luck Havner!

He's probably got a better chance of being a possible 3rd TE on the team instead of trying to penetrate the massive logjam we already have at the 4 LB spots. Especially now where even a couple of our starters last year at LB might be in more of a reserve/rotational role this year.

They've got 12 LBs on the team already, and i could see anywhere between 8 to 10 making the team. I think LB is one of the positions where those guys have the best shot to make it(unlike, say, WR with 12 on the roster and only 5 slots). The final couple LBs will come down to who can play ST, back up multiple positions, etc. Maybe they think they can only keep 2 TEs if Havner does well enough? It wouldn't shock me to see that they're considering him as a 4th TE.

We have a third tight end now? I think what this does is allows us to carry the 2 tight ends that are going to play, and in a pinch have Havner play a couple downs.

So out of Lee, Finley, and Humphrey... who do you see as the odd man out there?

Well, it frees up a roster spot, but I wouldn't trust him out there as a TE.

I have to say, if he's accurately describing the situation, and not just engaging in typical sports understatement, he doesn't sound very optimistic to me.

That was my assumption NSD... I mean I got a pretty pessimistic vibe from it personally.

buckeyepackfan (41m) : That brings up the question, why wasn't Nixon down by contact? I think that was the point Kanata was making.

beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season

wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
