Falcons release Vick, wish him well elsewhere

The Michael Vick era in Atlanta is officially over.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the team relinquished its contractual rights to Vick on Friday.

"Michael remains suspended by the NFL," Dimitroff said. "However, in the event NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decides to reinstate Michael, we feel his best opportunity to re-engage his football career would be at another club."

The move was no surprise. Owner Arthur Blank has said Vick would not return to the Falcons.

"Everybody always knew that Mike wouldn't be playing with the Falcons," Vick's agent, Joel Segal, said. "He's really just taking it one day at a time."

The NFL had no comment on Vick's release.

Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said the team's release of Vick opens the door for other NFL teams to talk with the quarterback. Roberts said Vick can sign with another team even before the Goodell decides on clearing the way for Vick to play.

Goodell has not committed to reinstating Vick after the quarterback completes his 23-month sentence on July 20 for running a dogfighting ring. Vick is making $10 an hour as a construction worker for W.M. Jordan Co. while he serves the final two months of his sentence on home confinement in Hampton, Va. Vick was released from federal prison in Kansas on May 20.

Even while making it clear Vick had no football future with the Falcons, Blank has said he would be available to assist Vick.

"Our entire organization sincerely hopes that Michael will continue to focus his efforts on making positive changes in his life, and we wish him well in that regard," Dimitroff said Friday.

Vick was the Falcons No. 1 draft pick in 2001. He played six seasons with the team, but the Falcons moved on by making quarterback Matt Ryan their No. 1 pick last year. Ryan started every game as a rookie and led the Falcons to the playoffs.

Vick was the figurehead for the Falcons and, as a dual-threat quarterback, was one of the NFL's most dynamic stars from 2001-2006 before his sudden downfall.

Goodell said last month he would not make a decision on Vick before the end of his sentence.

"Once he's concluded that, I will make a judgment based on what he tells me and what I can determine from speaking to others and a final background check on this and make a determination at the right time," Goodell said.

Speculation about Vick's NFL future started even before his release from the Falcons.

Jim Mora, whose Vick-led team advanced to the NFC championship game in 2003, said this week he doesn't expect Vick to find a job with his Seattle team.

"I'll just say this for the record: We are very happy with the quarterbacks we have on our roster," Mora said. "We have no intentions of adding another player to our roster at this time. ... Just cut out the 'at this time,' because then people will speculate for the next three months. We have no intentions of adding a quarterback to our roster."

Colts owner Jim Irsay also said his team would not pursue Vick.

"We're not looking at that situation. We don't have an interest there," Irsay said.

Mora said Vick deserves another chance in the league.

"I believe he's paid his debt to society," Mora said.

Even as he hopes for reinstatement from Goodell and begins his search for another NFL home, Vick faces other pressing priorities, including his crumbled finances.

On Tuesday, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro set a July 2 deadline for Vick to submit a revised Chapter 11 plan. A hearing to confirm or reject the plan was set for Aug. 27.

Santoro said that if the new plan fails to address the shortcomings that prompted him to reject the first one in April, he will appoint an independent trustee to take over management of Vick's finances.

Vick Jerseys at every Garage Sale in Atlanta... This coming weekend.

Funny.... Speaking of QB's who blew it.... I am at my home in Vancouver right now, (I head out of town for 8 weeks on Monday.) and was reading the local paper this morning while fishing on the lake..

Ryan Leaf is in Vancouver going through a Drug Re-Hab. He is in Canada because he is wanted in the USA on felony drug charges.

Perhaps Vick will play in the CFL. He would "Rock" this leauge with the bigger field and his scrambling ability. Plus, it would get him out of the US news for a while. You know... Out of sight, out of mind.

Heh, good point, Sir Cheesey. Rodgers makes a couple of cocky comments and we call him a prick. Maybe we need to count our blessings.

Unlike Leaf, Vick has talent that can be used in more ways than just being a QB.

I just hope Vick takes any role he gets. If hes just a guy they bring in to run the wildcat or trick plays. Then so be it. Earn your respect back. A lot of teams will already be fearful in signing a notorious player, and then on top of that, he's an inconsistent passer.

I hate what the guy did. I don't even like hearing about it because I love dogs and hate hearing such awful things being done to them. But hopefully the guy realizes what he did and makes up for it by showing us he's grown up from his mistakes.

I agree.
The thing that bothers me is, he HAS done his time, but i honestly wonder if he has changed. I doubt we will ever know if he has, unless he gets caught doing it again.
I hope he HAS changed.
I don't mind if someone hires him, i just don't want him here.

VICK-TO-PATS THEORY GAINING MOMENTUM

Posted by Mike Florio on June 12, 2009, 6:44 p.m. EDT

Theres been a theory making the rounds in the media that the New England Patriots could be a perfect destination for former Falcons quarterback Mike Vick.

Previously, wed brushed off such speculation, since we believe (and weve been told) that Vick will be looking for a place where he can compete for the starting quarterback job.

In New England, that wouldnt be happening barring another Tom Brady ACL eruption.

But were now hearing that there could be something to the chatter, primarily since its appearing more and more likely that Vick wont have many/any options to compete for the every-down quarterback job in 2009.

Under those circumstances, sending Vick to New England for a year could help Vick position himself to become an attractive candidate for another team in 2010.

Of course, this would require coach Bill Belichick to be willing to sign Vick to a one-year deal only. If Belichick goes out on a limb for the man who previously hanged a dog or two from one, the Patriots likely will want to have the option to keep him beyond 2009.

Vick, on the other hand, presumably would like to parlay a stint with the Pats into something bigger and better, as soon as possible.

So if the Pats insist on something more than a one-year contract, Vick likely will look to a team where, come 2010, he would have a crack at unseating the incumbent. The Rams, who reportedly are interested in Vick, might give him the best chance in this regard, since current starter Marc Bulger predates both G.M. Billy Devaney and head coach Steve Spagnuolo.
