While B.J. Raji has accelerated directly into the starting mix, the Green Bay Packers other first-round draft pick remains stuck in first gear.

Outside linebacker Clay Matthews hit another roadblock on Wednesday, when his problematic hamstring forced him to drop out of practice in the earlygoing.

Matthews sustained the injury in the Packers first organized team activity practice on May 27 and didnt practice at all last week. He opened Wednesdays practice as the No. 2 right outside linebacker but was on the sideline getting extra stretching before the first team (11-on-11) period.

The injury isnt believed to be significant, but the Packers likely will proceed cautiously through at least the remainder of OTAs with a rookie they believe can be a major contributor this season.

Hes a big, big, strong, fast kid guy, dude, whatever, fellow linebacker Brandon Chillar said of Matthews, the 26th overall pick out of Southern California.

I think hes got a lot of talent. Hes been hurt, so we havent got to see too much of him, but hes definitely showed some flashes, and obviously, hell probably continue showing those as hes on the field more.

Nose tackle Ryan Picketts return after missing last week for personal reasons meant Raji, the No. 9 pick, was back to playing left end in the base defense and defensive tackle in nickel, both with the first team.

Asked for his early impressions of his two top rookies, coach Mike McCarthy said, They look like they are going through their first OTA.

Every day is a learning experience as far what defensive scheme we have in. (Coordinator) Dom Capers and the defensive staff have been installing a lot of defense, getting all of their different defensive personnel groupings in. Raji has done an excellent job, and Clay is kind of fighting through a hamstring.

Progress report: The installation of the Packers new 3-4 defense will be complete by the time OTAs end next Thursday.

The mandatory minicamp June 22 to 24 is slated for review, and only then will the Packers begin to get a true sense of how things are coming together.

McCarthy addressed the team on Wednesday about eliminating missed assignments but said hes been very pleased with what I have seen so far from the defense.

The unit continues to work without three likely starters recovering from surgery right end Cullen Jenkins, safety Atari Bigby and mack linebacker Nick Barnett as well as Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins, who has skipped most of the offseason program and wants a new contract.

Of course, the longer you play it, the better you get, Pickett said, but I think were going to shock people on how good we play it the first year.

Raji at DE is such a dream scenario if Pickett holds his own at NT. Raji stated on a radio show, which we all know in the certain atmosphere a player REALLY speaks his mind, that he would prefer to play DE and thinks that is his greatest skill set coming out of college.

The Matthews hamstring thing is big. I hope he is ready some time during training camp, because as we have seen before, the hamstring turns into a real nagging injury, so it seems the possibility of him coming out and started hit a little bit of a snag. Now is the praise surrounding Thompson just lip service... well who knows, but I am confident in that guy, and if it shakes out that way and he is healthy, Matthews should be a great #2 until he gets his opportunity.

I would prefer to see Raji at DE myself, as that is his greatest strength. I think it would be hilarious if, despite all the speculation to the contrary, it comes to light that Raji was drafted not to play NT but to play DE. That would make all the experts and analysts look pretty silly.

I wonder if two months is too early to start calling Matthews a "bust". ;)

Get Healthy young man.. and bring it.

Matthews is not an automatic starter. Heis going to have to earn it.

The Packers are still too line at the D-line for comfort. Any injury there sets the team back.

The Defense will likely look slow and confused for awhile. There will be experimentation and learning from mistakes during preseason.

I keep reading great things about Jeremy Thompson so I would say Clay Matthews is got his work cut out for him. I still think Matthews will work his way into the starting lineup. I think he could play inside as well as outside so I wouldn't be surprised to see him move around, but the stuff I read up on Thompson is starting to get more more excited for him than any other player.

A week ago, I didn't believe that.

Mucky Tundra (27m) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (48m) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (2h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (2h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (2h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (2h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (3h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (3h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (3h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (3h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (3h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (3h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (3h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (3h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (3h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (3h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (3h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (3h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (3h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (3h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (3h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (3h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (3h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (4h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (4h) : Packers will get in
beast (4h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (4h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (4h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (5h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (7h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (7h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (7h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (16h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (17h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (17h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (20h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
