With Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looking like a poised veteran in his first career start against a solid Vikings defense, the career of 49ers coach Mike Nolan could be on the brink of implosion in San Fran.

Nolan, who held final say over personnel during his first two years with the team, picked Alex Smith over Rodgers. Smith largely has been a train wreck, and Rodgers is looking early on like a keeper.

Aaron Rodgers is good, a league source opined to us on Monday night. Hes so much better than Alex Smith that its sad. . . . They picked wrong.

Yep, interesting. I'm still half inclined to believe that theory about the Niners blitzing Rodgers heavily in the preseason game to avoid the embarrassment of having him put up big numbers against them on their home field. I think it was Mike Florio who had mentioned that as well.

More like the 49ers brass's worst nightmare. Nolan's nightmare was accepting the job offer from a clearly inept franchise.

The only problem is that this isn't logical.

If they picked Rodgers and broke him in as a rookie, without the benefit of learning behind anybody (much less one of the greatest QBs to take the field), who knows where Rodgers would be right now?

It could just as well be Rodgers as the tried-and-done bust, with Smith as the guy who's been waiting in the wings and just now is starting to show his stuff on some other team.

I dunno, it really depends on the person. Peyton Manning was thrown in there on day one, and he's done very well. Same can be said for John Elway.

I think it largely depends upon the player and the coaching support that they've got around him. It's painfully obvious that Alex Smith has had no support from the 49ers.

It's a shame.

I think theres a huge difference between those two situations. The Colts put players around Peyton, the 49ers have no put players around Alex Smith.

beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!

beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
