Raiders bolster backfield, sign Neal, Russell

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders have bolstered their backfield by signing fullback Lorenzo Neal and running back Gary Russell.

The team added the two backs in time for the start of the mandatory minicamp Friday.

The Raiders were unable to find a fullback in the draft, so they signed Neal. He is considered one of the best blocking backs in the game. The 16-year veteran spent last season in Baltimore.

Russell spent two seasons in Pittsburgh, rushing for 98 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored the first touchdown for the Steelers in the Super Bowl win against Arizona.

Coach Tom Cable also says receiver Javon Walker recently informed the team he underwent knee surgery and won't be ready until training camp. Walker missed the second half of last season with an ankle injury.

All you people who bitch about Ted Thompson not retaining Javon Walker can PLEASE stuff it. Walker hasn't done a damn thing since he left Green Bay.

Didn't know they still existed, the faction of Green Bay Packer fans on the Jwalk bus yet. Or at least those that still want him as a member of the team.

I'm glad he isn't on our team anymore. Like you said, he's done nothing at all.

It is a shame for the guy though. He has all the talent in the world, but can never actually stay healthy. Now that's he's getting up there in age, I don't see anything improving.

Al Davis should use some common sense and cut the guy. Mainly because of the ridiculous contract he's given him.

Packer or Bronco or Raider, after his knee blew out, he was never going to be the same. We got a heckuva deal in that 2nd round pick. I think it was a 2nd rounder?

I thought at the time he was going to come back from that knee injury and dominate in his second year with the Bronco's. I also think having his friend murdered inches away from him has really affected him.

In all fairness I think a number of his issues are unfortunately a result of holding a dying teammate in his arms (Darrent Williams). I won't argue the on the field problems -- he definitely has been inconsistent. But I've read about how the tragedy from a few years ago absolutely fucked him up.

I'm rooting for Javon to get better. But of course in hindsight it was the right move -- for we have Gregorious.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I still see occasional posts bringing up the Walker issue, and I shake my head every time.

But you guys are right -- the numbers are mercifully dwindling.

I can't see how that WOULDN'T mess you up. For that, i honestly feel sorry for him.
But he was a head case before that even happened. He thought he was "the best" and deserved the world. He under achieved with the talent he had.
I do wish the best for him though.
