Welcome Rory Starkey and Jalen Wayne to Green Bay, as the team says goodbye to Alex McGough.

Two days ago, the Green Bay Packers ’ rookies and injured players reported to the club for training camp. While veterans aren’t expected to show up until Sunday, we’ve already received a bit of roster news.

One of the five players who the Packers officially placed on injury lists  was receiver Alex McGough, who converted to the position after being the team’s practice squad quarterback in 2023 following an MVP season at the USFL level. McGough sustained an undisclosed leg injury in minicamp, which led to him landing on the physically unable to perform list.

On Friday, the Packers announced that McGough had been waived, likely with an injury designation that will include some sort of financial settlement in exchange for his roster spot with the team. Previously, Green Bay had one roster spot available on their 91-man summer roster, as former Michigan offensive lineman Trente Jones retired following rookie minicamp .

To fill out those two roster spots, the Packers added a pair of receivers: Rory Starkey and Jalen Wayne.

Starkey is a Penn transfer who finished his career at Samford. Despite his success in the Ivy League, he only managed to record 27 receptions for 204 yards and zero touchdowns in his final season of college football. He must have impressed in the Packers’ rookie minicamp, though, as he was present there as a tryout player.

Wayne played six seasons at South Alabama and was able to earn All-Sun Belt honors in his final year of college football in 2022. Cousin of former Indianapolis Colts  star receiver Reggie Wayne, Jalen originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills  last season before stints with the Cleveland Browns  and the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes.

Those two receivers will join a crowded receiver room, which includes Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, Malik Heath, Samori Toure, Grant DuBose and Julian Hicks. With seven former draft picks and another (Heath) former regular season contributor on the team, it’s going to be difficult for either Starkey or Wayne to make the 53-man roster, but there’s a chance that they could land on the Packers’ practice squad in September.

I wonder what compels Gute and MLF to sign camp bodies that have no chance of making the team. The prospect of them even making the PS are just about zero as well. An extra body to run drills doesn't make sense to me. Samori Toure, Grant DuBose and Julian Hicks are PS material at best and need every rep they can get to prove it. Neither Rory Starkey or Jalen Wayne seem to have any credentials that signify they are an upgrade over the other 3.

Someone needs to run the routes, for the QBs and DBs, and you don't want your top guys carrying the full weight of camp, so you let their legs rest by hiring additional bodies, to let your top guys get some rest, while still working the QBs and DBs.

And they can put 4 WRs on the field at once, they can go though a much higher rotation than other positions, and they have to run much further distances.

Limit guys preseason roles like Watson so he doesn't pull a hammy or whatever again.

Sign them to be camp bodies, to be extra bodies that get used at camp, which gives the 53 man roster players more rest.

As far as camp bodies go, I don't accept it as a valid reason. The camp bodies are the first ones cut because they have no chance to make it. They are not playing against the first team. They are out there facing 4th and 5th team guys. All of them get cut. While it's true the Packers typically add a UDFA he's not the 80th to 90th player on the depth chart. The CBA allows teams to have 90 players in camp so they bring them in. No organization wants to look like they are not really trying but in the long run, it's just a show. The NFLPA looks like heroes because they gt more guys into camps. Teams look like they are beating the bushes looking for the one hidden gem that everyone else missed out on.

Good for the guys who are brought in but in the end, it doesn't really matter.

In the mean while, they should also stop the conspiracy theory of needing a long snapper, all the GMs are stupid when they could have any player in that role and save a roster spot.

They're just making themselves worse for better PR.

Of these list, last year I would go said Mosby then Banks have the best chances, though it's harder to say with the switch to the 4-3, as they're lighter edge rushers, where I thought Mosby best chance was as a ST LB.

But where Tramon Williams and Sam Shields among the bottom players at first?

And again, it's about keeping the top players fresh, which means having extra bodies to keep practice going while rotating breaks. It's why all the teams in the NFL and College have extra camp bodies. Not just to play on the field on game day.

I am interested in seeing how this new kick return rule alters rosters. If at all.

K, P and QB's get added to reduce the throws/kicks from the expected starter.
