The distance of the misses might play a role into this. I think Carlson was perfect 39 and under, but flopped bad 40 and over. So they might be thinking if they get someone who's better at longer range FG's they will opt to go for it more or be more aggressive within the 25 yard line?
The new kickoff rules might impact your thinking on this a bit. And he did not do well compared to what other first year kickers did. That Cowboys kicker made like 1,250 FG's in a row or some crazy crap, lol. Carlson did perform better than Crosby rookie vs rookie though. Which if you're looking for HOPE, that'd be about the only sliver I can offer ya.
