Packers ink kicker Greg Joseph to challenge Anders Carlson

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers promised a kicking competition this offseason after Anders Carlson's inconsistent rookie year, and now they have a veteran to do just that.

They are signing former Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph, according to his agent, Brett Tessler. A source said it's a one-year deal.

Joseph, 29, has made nearly 83% of his field goals and more than 90% of his extra points in his five NFL seasons, including the past three in Minnesota.

Carlson, a sixth-round draft pick last season and the younger brother of Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson, missed 13 total kicks (extra points and field goals) in 19 games last season including the playoffs. He was 29 of 35 (82.9%) on field goals (82.9%) and 41 of 48 (85.4%) on extra points, including the postseason.

His most costly miss came in the divisional playoff loss to the 49ers, when he missed a 41-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that would have given the Packers a seven-point lead.

General manager Brian Gutekunst, who drafted Carlson, did not opt to sign a veteran kicker late last season even as Carlson struggled, missing kicks in eight of the final 10 regular-season games.

Gutekunst said that wouldn't be the case this offseason. In January, he signed Jack Podlesny, who was in training camp with the Vikings last season but has never kicked in an NFL game. It's unlikely the Packers will keep three kickers on the offseason roster.

"He's got to improve," Gutekunst said recently of Carlson. "That's important. I thought he did some really good things this year and he improved as the year went on, but that's going to be important, and competition is going to be part of that.

"I think he had a good rookie year. You look at rookie years in the past around here, it's tough to kick in this weather as everyone knows. I think he had a pretty solid year, but there's going to need to be a curve of getting better if that's going to continue. I do like the way he approaches it. He's very calm and handles the pressure very well. I'm excited to see what he does in Year 2, but there will be competition in the room."

Good!!!

Mediocrity and poor performance can not be accepted.

I like the competition.
As far as compensation it's about a push. Carlson is just under $1 million. If Joseph is paid the vet min he will be a little over $1 million.

He MAY follow in the footsteps of his brother, or MAY follow the path of some other past kickers often brought up as examples... thing is, he isn't them. He could just as easily remain a bad kicker for this level.

From what I have seen, the latter looks the most likely.

Honestly, at what point going into this season are any of us as fans going to say to ourselves and others that we trust him going forward. I have a difficult time imagining a training camp and preseason scenario where I"m going to say that I now trust Anders Carlson as the kicker for the Packers.
His college record was shaky, there was a Rich B. weird nepo type vibe with his draft selection, his lack of competition, and the excuses for his failures. I am not saying he will never be any good, I am saying he cannot prove it in any conceivable way to me as a fan prior to a certain point next regular season, and I will probably remain nervous about him all next season if he wins the job. Bet you will too.

Go ahead and release Carlson. He can’t be trusted.

Joseph is the plan B. The problem with Joseph is that he sucks also. From Lombardi Ave:
"... Playing for the Vikings, Joseph had the benefit of playing the majority of his games indoors. Of his 6 field goal misses, three were at Lambeau field and Soldier Field, and he also missed an extra point in Chicago. Joseph has played three career games in Green Bay, converting only three of seven field goals."

Isn't that just f#$%ing great? Makes me wonder if this is just a bunch of bs to satiate us pitchfork, tar and feather purchasers?

My plan b would be to admit failure in last years draft to the degree of drafting another kicker this year.

I have one in mind:

Joshua Karty K Stanford

"Perfect in 2022 season. Hit all of his 18 field goals, 13 of which were 40+ yards. He has the leg strength to consistently hit from 60 yards, [long of 61 yards] and a smooth repeatable motion to strongly suggest consistency in the future."

2023 Statistics

21/21 extra points 23/27 field goals 5/5 inside 30 yards 7/8 30-39 yards 7/7 40-49 yards 4/7 50+ yards Long of 56 yards.

I am unaware of his brothers' accomplishments, or if he even has any brothers, and have no direct knowledge of him brown-nosing any NFL special teams coordinators, so he has those strikes against him.

My only point with mentioning Crosby is the rookie year doesn't foretell the kids career. So, in other words, if he somehow wins the competition, maybe not all is lost? 🤷‍♂️

The only thing I noticed with this kid is if the snap wasn't perfect, he'd hesitate. Two things here. 1, he needs to just go through this process regardless and trust the holder to do his job and 2, we need a more consistent snap. The latter is less important to me than the former.

Relax guys. He did good for his rookie season vs what other rookie kickers did. My only concern is his kickoffs are short.

So to compete with a guy who made 82.9 percent of his field goals, we're bringing in a guy who completed "nearly 83% of his field goals"?

beast (23-Feb) : Campbell is right, he's rich and he doesn't have to explain sh!t... but that attitude gives teams reasons to never sign him again.
dfosterf (22-Feb) : I have some doubt about all that

dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is

Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : lol good question, kind of impressed!

Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Tell them its an emergency

Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought Guests couldnt post?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : And gosh that's gonna be fun to clean up! hahaa
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Oh. Why not just say that then? Geez.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : check the main forum, seems a spam bot is running amok
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : What?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Is the Packers online game "Packers Predict" now available for 2024? I can't tell
Zero2Cool (17-Feb) : Bengals planning to Franchise Tag Tamaurice Higgins
Zero2Cool (14-Feb) : Packers are hiring Luke Getsy as senior offensive assistant.
Martha Careful (12-Feb) : I would love to have them both, esp. Crosby, but either might be too expensive.
