McKenzie tears ACL, out for season

BOSTON (AP) -- New England Patriots third-round draft pick Tyrone McKenzie will miss the 2009 season with a torn ligament in his right knee.

The outside linebacker from South Florida tore his anterior cruciate ligament during rookie minicamp on Saturday and will be sidelined for the year, a person familiar with the injury said Wednesday night on condition of anonymity because the team did not make an announcement.

McKenzie was hurt when he and a running back made contact during a pass coverage drill. He fell and grabbed his right knee, but walked off the field on his own. He did not return for the second session of the day.

The Patriots drafted McKenzie with their second pick of the third round, 97th overall.

With the trade of longtime starter Mike Vrabel to Kansas City in February, the Patriots needed depth at outside linebacker. Adalius Thomas started last year before being injured. Pierre Woods took over for him, then was sidelined himself.

McKenzie started his college career in 2004 as a backup at Michigan State, then transferred to Iowa State, where he started in 2006 after sitting out a year as required by the NCAA. He transferred to South Florida, where he started 24 of his 26 games and led the team in tackles in each of his two seasons.

Hence the very reason for the letter of protection" each rookie signs before rookie camp and off season workouts.

If not mistaken, if those on a tryout basis fall into a modified version of the same protection.

Basically meaning a fair contract will be given if the player is hurt while no contract has been signed.

I'm still trying to figure out why so many people are calling the Patriots draft "genius," and giving it a grade of an "A." He basically just traded down a lot and gathered extra picks. If Ted Thompson would have done the same thing, I'm sure he would have been slammed.

Now, I'm certainly not defending Ted, I'm just wondering why the Green Bay Packers are being held to a different standard. I know the Patriots success doesn't hurt, but was their draft really that "genius" this year at first look?

I'm guessing it's because this is considered a "weak draft", and the Patriots likely though selecting many lower rounders constituted a lower risk than in other drafts.

It is what have you done lately"itis"... The Patriots have been on an impressive run in this decade.. so everything they do is viewed as gold.

IMO.. the window is closing on their run.. they need to stock up again.. which they tried in a weak FA marker this season.

I think you will see them reload next season and start rebuilding the roster.. IMO, they are trying to make on last run this season with the aging players they have.

Yeah, I know they accumulated lots of picks and such, but I don't see how that instantly equates to a grade of an "A." Now, if 90% of their picks end up being studs, then I'll buy it, but just accumulating lots of picks doesn't automatically mean a good draft.

Time will tell I guess.

Until your team is in the playoffs every year your GM sucks. The best drafter is the guy from the Colts to most considering his first round picks over the years. Hard to disagree...

It might have something to do with the fact that they picked up some of the best players on the board with every single one of their draft picks.

I mean, Chung, a late first-early second guy. Ron Brace with the 40th pick. Darius Butler. They just picked the 'best' player on the board at every point in the draft. When you do that while you have this amount of picks, I guess it means a good draft.

Still, that doesn't explain the fact that our draft last year wasn't an A. I mean, we had nearly the exact same draft as the Patriots had this year, hadn't we?
