I think it's fairly simple, they expected Nijman and Tom to both step up and battle. Tom stepped up, and Nijman stepped back.

I believe it was the offensive coordinator words (or OL coach) when asked about Nijman but also trying to be nice. Basically saying you always hope guys step up, and sometimes it doesn't happen.


In one of the games, they split some snaps between Walker and Nijman, and the announcers seemed to suggest that Nijman was in there for run blocking. So Nijman must of been struggling in pass protection.

Though, I can't help but wonder if Nijman might of been better at OG than Newman. Though his 6'9" frame hurts him on the inside, but maybe still better than Newman.

Nijman has always struggled in pass protection. That is why they generally had a tight end 'chip'/help him on pass plays (effectively limiting any deep threat by a TE).

As far as being better than Newman at OG, I think just about anyone on the roster would be a better OG than Newman. I am amazed he is still on the team.
