I'm listening to the Packers coordinators do their conference. It sounds like the Punter Whelan is also a kickoff specialist. And his holding is improving. If this is the case, I could see the Packers taking the less expensive Whelan over O'Donnell.

Which O'Donnell is averaging 7 more net yards than Whelan and better hang time in preseason games, and an article talking about punt returns suggested they were only having O'Donnell punt in punt return practice which doesn't make sense to me, unless they believe O'Donnell has more control over where a Punt will go.


One could suggest O'Donnell is best kicker of the three currently on the roster. And getting a good veteran kicker that you trust for only $2 million is cheap for NFL standards.

While I forget how Whalen did in Cincinnati, I have read tweets from people covering training camp that Whalen has boomed some punts in a way that O'Donnell couldn't. Might be a hang time vs distance thing. I wouldn't be surprised if they go with O'Donnell in the regular season and put Whalen on the PS to work on him.
