Why did you like (or not like) the drafting of QB Sean Clifford in the 5th round of the 2023 NFL draft?

  1. I did not think he had a great arm.
  2. I don't think he is 6'2", he looks more like 6'0" to me.
  3. Lots of picks in college at key times.

Clifford is meant to be a clipboard holder. A clipboard holder who can get us thru a game or two if Love goes down. So far so good.

Teams have film on him now. Let's see if they can figure him out.

Ever since TT(rip) drafted Brian Brohm in the 2nd rnd and Matt Flynn in the 7th rnd , I realized that the draft really is a crapshoot.

I'll never question why any GM did or didn't draft a certain player in any rnd.

I agree with Gutey's philosophy of "the more bullets" the better.
13 picks this year, history shows that 6 or 7 are not going to work out.

That still leaves 6 or 7 that will contribute .

Add in the almost always udfa surprises and this draft has the potential to be a really good one.
We won't know for a few years.

So if Gute determined the 5th rnd was the time to pull the trigger on Clifford, who am I to argue.

I didn't mind the pick. I know nothing about college players especially those taken after the 2nd round.
If Gute feels that he was the best QB to take at that time I didn't mind it.
As far as selecting a QB in the draft, I was in favor of it.  More than likely Danny Etling is a decent person but he is no clipboard holding QB2. They needed to upgrade the position. They did.

Mainly because I thought there were better players available. But also because Clifford.looked like he had a weak arm, not the most athletic, and seemed to be lacking physical potential.

But I was interested in other guys, some more hyped or guys I liked and knew about.

C Olu Oluwatimi, Seahawks
CB  Darrell Luter Jr, 49ers
S Daniel Scott, Colts
Slot DB Antonio Johnson, Jaguars
RB Chase Brown, Bengals
QB Jaren Hall, Vikings
CB Terell Smith, Bears
S Christopher Smith, Raiders
WR Xavier Hutchinson, Texans
RB Deuce Vaughn, Cowboys

S Anthony Johnson Jr., Packers

I can't recall liking or disliking the selection. Drafting a QB is something I feel we all felt was obviously going to be done. The team needs a QB2 and why not a guy who's in his mid 20's who's played in over 50 games in college? Sure, he's only 6'1", but he didn't look small in the pocket like Kyler Murray.

Draft picks are meant to be used. Not much good if you're just hoarding them.

That being said if Gute had his scouts watching this guy and they liked him with our offense you take the shot and hope he pans out.  At the end of the day chances are a 5th round pick is a huge gamble. From what we saw Cliffy showed a bunch of poise and moxy.  If he can reign some of the gunslinging in, he seems like a pretty good back-up.

I liked that they took a QB, but didn't know the player so didn't have much of an opinion on him. With a young starter in Jordan Love, it seemed like a good insurance policy. If they think a guy has a chance to be a good backup, someone who can come in and help your team win a few games in a pinch, I'm all for it. A 5th-round QB is an extremely low risk.

I don't pay enough attention to college players to know what round they should go in, let alone when it gets to the 5th and later rounds. So mostly I learn about the players after they get drafted.

The draft is enough of a crap shoot that by the time you get to the 5th you're looking at guys that some teams have 3rd round grades on, while other teams think will be UDFAs. It's not an exact science, so I don't get upset because a blog or ranking system thinks a guy went too high. If the people who put those lists together were good at what they do, they would be working for an NFL team. And even the guys working for NFL teams get it wrong a lot of the time.

One of the guys I was hoping they would take with that pick (based on no actual knowledge, just the rating system on the NFL site) was the safety who they took in the 7th - Anthony Johnson. So I thought that was neat. But it highlights the chaotic nature of the draft, he had a 3rd or 4th round grade or something like that.
