Sean Clifford played the most of any Packers quarterback with 26 pass attempts, but I wasn’t impressed.

Clifford did showcase his blazing speed on a 13-yard keeper in the second half, which ultimately led to a touchdown.

But if Clifford really wants to be the Packers backup quarterback, he needs to show more than he did.

To sum it up, he’s just late. He’s late on his reads, he’s late on his throws and he’s late feeling the pressure. And to make matters worse, there were numerous times where his throws didn’t have the necessary juice to keep drives alive.

I was unsure when the Packers picked Clifford. I know that Clifford set the all-time record for wins, completion percentage, passing yards and passing touchdowns at Penn State but even with all those accolades, he still made plenty of questionable decisions.

He was able to get by with late reads in college. And he was able to skirt by with an average arm.

But that doesn’t work in the NFL. Making a late read combined with a throw that needs more juice is a recipe for disaster.

Could Clifford be a solid leader and excellent motivator? By all means yes. Strictly from a technical aspect, Clifford is behind the eight ball. On numerous throws he was off his back foot — which doesn’t help him because of his lack of arm strength and and his eyes were often locked on one target.

The question is, can Clifford win a couple games if Jordan Love misses time with an injury? After Friday’s game, I don’t see it. The NFL game is a lot faster. Granted, that was Clifford’s first appetizer as a pro quarterback, but his reads and arm strength have plenty of work before this team can trust him with the offensive keys.

As we move forward this offseason, coach Matt LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst and others have to find out how much of a leader they want from their backup quarterback. His leadership and camaraderie is apparent after seeing Clifford scamper 27 yards and watching all the smiles that were present on the sideline.

What do the Packers want from Clifford and in turn what can Clifford give the Packers? I would imagine the Packers want to be able to get first downs by not committing unnecessary mistakes. Clifford can give the Packers a leadership edge and a calming presence.

However, technically, he isn’t ready to play at this level. He’s a touch behind and in pro football, it’s like watching a TV show on a 10-second delay.

Um, he was 20 of 26... was he watching the same game that I saw?

I mean granted it was Bengals backups, but he's a rookie...

Or does he have a point that I'm totally missing?

He made a lot of mistakes and generally looked like what he is, a guy just starting to learn the NFL game. But he made some really excellent throws too. He was a lot better than I expected him to be at this point. Whether he continues to develop or not will be interesting to see.

Let's not be to critical, was his 1st time playing in The NFL .

I would rather read about the positives, not dwell on any perceived negative.

I liked the way he owned the 2 interceptions, even when The Rock tried to give him a chance to pass on the blame to others.

Especially the 2nd pick when he said he should have put the ball on the inside shoulder not the outside shoulder, that's a very small window, but he took all the blame.

Liked the way he bounced back after the 2nd pick and ran the 2 minute offense for a TD.

Liked the way he showed "no fear" when throwing into tight windows.

6 years playing in front of Big 10 crowds puts him ahead of many of the rookie qb's, the noise will not effect him.

He has plenty to learn, making mistakes in preseason, not repeating those mistakes is how he will get better.

Taking in all that was said about him and our GM's decision to draft him in the 5th round vs udfa whatever, I was very impressed with his first outing. What everyone seemed convinced was going to be some noodle-arm looked one hell of a lot more like a bit of a gunslinger out there.

I usually agree with Cory, but so far this take by him on this one is almost bizarrely off base.

I think he is technically correct, but overly harsh considering it was his first start AND  the teams first game.   Also, none of us really know,...if the the receiver was breaking early, he will look late.

Perhaps with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, he could have gotten the ball out earlier at times, but he does not have terribly quick release, so when he is a bit late on the read, he will be late after the slow release.

Nevertheless, I thought he did well and got better.

I also like the fact that he played through the int's instead of puckering up.  At QB and CB you have to have a short memory.  Learn from the mistakes and move on.....To me it seemed like he did that well.  That's what's years of playing experience will do.

I did not like the draft pick and I still don't.   Nevertheless, I was impressed with the performance.  I hope to be wrong.

That long throw wasn't "late." He drew the safety off with his eyes, but not long enough, according to Matt. I mean, it's his first game in the pros. He'll get his footwork down.

Watson is supposed to run that route down along the hash, or just outside of the hash, so that the QB can drop it on his outside shoulder, give him some room to fade to the sideline, shield that defender.

Oh yeah, that safety also runs a 4.3. Sharper has the speed to get over there too, but he'd have whiffed on the ball.

It's not even a good play when you factor in the high percentage of failure. Run a shorter post or flag. Give your qb a better target. The go is to drag in a safety for getting someone else open. Rodgers loved it too much. So many better options left by the wayside repeatedly. I'm a YAC guy for our speedsters!

Cory isn't really that good at this kind of thing so I wouldn't really put much into this. He's basically a fluff writer, but overall is a pretty decent dude. I've interacted with him numerous times and I think he's cool.
