The deadline for the trade (if Packers were to get 2023 draft picks) was earlier than the day of the draft. The reason is Aaron Rodgers had to agree to a revised contract and that revised contract must be on the books for 24 hours before the player can be traded.

The revised contract will be signed by Aaron Rodgers, submitted to NFL by 4pm EST. Then that contract has to be held on the Packers salary cap for 24 hours and then Wednesday at 4pm EST the official trade can be submitted to the NFL. So, basically in 24 hours and ~5 minutes, the trade of Aaron Rodgers to New York Jets will be official.

UPDATE: The revision is converting the "option bonus" as a "singing bonus" which means the money can be spread throughout the contract. Per Jason Wilde.

Thomas can explain it gooder.

Good find on the 24 hour question.
My guess is that a revision to a contract must pass NFL review, complying with the CBA, and 24 hours are mandated to do that. It's my guess, but makes sense.

It's reported Aaron Rodgers signed his revised contract yesterday before 4pm EST yesterday.

That means trade papers can be filed after 4pm EST today and VOILA, Aaron "The Jet" Rodgers becomes official!

The Favre trade in August 2008 wasn't the first trade of that year between Jets and Packers.

Jets got
  • 2008 first round pick (#30-Dustin Keller)

Packers got
  • 2008 second round pick (#36-Jordy Nelson)
  • 2008 fourth round pick (#113) TRADED

Jets got
  • 2008 fourth round pick (#113-Dwight Lowery)
  • 2008 fifth round pick (#162-Erik Ainge)

Packers got
  • 2008 fourth round pick (#102-Jeremy Thompson)

I'm here all day with useless comments just like this one!!
