Death, taxes, and the NFC North signing Green Bay Packers free agents. It's a March tradition. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Packers free-agent tight end Robert Tonyan is signing a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears. Aaron Rodgers won't be playing for the Packers this season, and now one of his top targets is also

Boo! Big Bobby is no longer a Tonyan of funyan. Was hoping we'd keep him around for another year on a cheap deal while bringing in some rookies in the draft.

His legs were coming back late in the season.

Actually, he was it tight end in name only.   The primary function of a tight end is to block, and he was a very poor blocker.

We may stink next year, but I hope we draft/sign/play:
  • offensive linemen who can actually move defensive linemen off the ball so that our RB aren't hit in the backfield or at the LOS on most run plays
  • tight ends who can, will, and enjoy blocking in additional to getting open on pass plays
  • wide receivers who can and will
    • block
    • consistently get open
    • catch the ball

...because if we do, we won't stink on offense for long

But I disagree that the primary function of a TE is to block. I this their primary function is the be a mismatch in anyway possible, from being a receiver or blocker.

Tonyan was a good large possession zone receiver, find the zone and sit down in it. Or if a bad coverage LB got put on him with no help over the top. Limited but he was very efficient in that limited role with few drops or major errors.

To me, the main drawback in losing Tonyan, is he was a stopgap until we can get a new guy up to speed.

This is a good draft class for TEs, but it almost always takes 2 years to develop guys at this position. Maybe you can luck out like we did with Doubs last year, but no way we can count on that.

Still, I'm sure Gutey has a diabolical scheme in mind. I'm willing to see what transpires.

I am so tired of these low expectations for draft choices...perhaps if we did not draft slow learners, they could contribute more quickly.  Regardless, Dequara and Davis should be contributing now.  Adding Mayer and another lower round pick (or FA) plus Lewis would make us very solid at that position
