I was reading a lot of comments on Tweeter about why Jaire Alexander wasn't manned up on Justin Jefferson. The problem here is the Packers defense employs a heavy zone defense. Zone defense means each players is responsible for a spot or area and if you have one player going man-to-man, it means other players have to shuffle. And the Vikings were doing a great job moving Jefferson around. The simple solution for this arm-chair QB is adapt to what is happening and go man-to-man. We have three really good CB's so I think that would have been a good decision. I'm a little bias because I always like man coverage over zone coverage. Zone feels like smoke and mirrors and I think vs experienced QB's they will pick you apart finding the windows between the zone areas.

Anyhow, the zone game plan is why Jaire wasn't manned up on Jefferson. I'm not agreeing with it, just explaining it based off what I know.

Historically, I absolutely prefer man coverage as well!

That being said... what those arm chair play callers might not of noticed is that for the most part, primary Man to Man coverage is dead in the NFL!

What NFL teams run primarily man coverage anymore? Very few if any... I think this is because of two reasons

1) NFL coaches have gotten smarter with man beater routes and figuring out ways to beat man coverage more often unless they have multiple Superior CBs.

2) College spread game... with colleges going to the spread passing attacks, more and more talented players have been able to stay at WR... and less and less talented players have been forced to switch to the defensive side of the ball. Therefore, on average, WRs are more talented than CBs today... where in decades past, I think it was a more even split.

What they displayed in pass defense yesterday made the keystone cops look like the Marine Corps silent drill team in comparison.
The explanation that Jefferson was moving around and made him difficult to track is disgusting. To have left him wide open repeatedly has to call into real question the football smarts of our coaches and players. If that is reflective of an elite cornerback room, I'd hate to see a bad one. Wide. Open. Repeatedly.

Jefferson can get open against most defenses. You need offensive production to balance that out.

The problem is the defensive scheme not having the personnel to ensure it doesn't happen. And if it does happen, it's the LB getting hands on the WR at the line so the Nickel or Safety can cover over top.

We can slam the Packers defense all over, but for us to not give Vikings credit is ignorant. They did a good job exposing some flaws in the defensive scheme. It's not like Justin Jefferson is some bum either, my gosh.

Vikings were going to burn us either way, give them credit... yes, if they locked up man to man, Alexander might of stopped or slowed down Jefferson... but then they would of burned us with others being one on one.

That being said, there are times when I wish Joe Berry would throw in more hyper aggressive plays... not for an entire game, but a change up call or change up series... like just for oen set up 3 downs, go heavy blitz and man on man coverage... if they get a big play, then go back.

At least make the other team at least talk about what they'll do if they see that again... Even if you have no plans on showing it to them again the rest of the game.
