GREEN BAY, Wis. – After the first day of Green Bay Packers training camp, quarterback Aaron Rodgers playfully called the defense “chumps.”

Rodgers carved up the defense that day, but he knew tougher times were ahead.

“I felt coming into camp, to be honest, we were going to get our butts kicked most days because our defense is talented and deep and athletic. It’s one of the best defenses, on paper, that we’ve had,” Rodgers said.

Monday’s practice was the 11th of training camp. Three of them have been at a jog-through tempo, meaning there have been seven “real” practices since Day 1 of camp. The “chumps” have been champs, delivering seven consecutive butt-kickings.

When Rodgers said, “We’re a defensive team now,” he didn’t really mean it. But, through two weeks of training camp, that’s the reality. With David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins and Robert Tonyan out of action, the offense has been playing with three ACLs behind its back.

The defense has been playing at full strength – and at full speed – with perhaps the best starting 11 in the NFL. It is a unit without a weak link. Defensive line used to be a weakness, so general manager Brian Gutekunst signed Jarran Reed and used a first-round pick on Devonte Wyatt. Linebacker used to be a weakness, so Gutekunst used a first-round pick on instant starter Quay Walker.

I also trust Gutey to find those depth players.

Hamilton and Galeii look like they can hack it on the edge, not to jinx. Quay can get it done there in a pinch. Rasul is a glorified safety on the box. We'll see what we got in the preseason.

I would take this defense over the SB defense in '10. Again, not to jinx.

I hope "good on paper" translates to "good on the field".
But I also am excited about our "new and improved" defense.
Losing Davante Adams is going to put extra pressure on our offense, especially in the first few games, until AR can get a feel for how his WRs are going to be.

I know preseason is the time for fluff pieces, but this fluff pieces seems to be going a bit too far.

I mean, I get that the starting defense on paper looks quite good... BUT defense needs depth and they rotate guys.

Where they rotate guys the most is at DL and Edge Rusher, we got the depth at DL but not Edge Rusher. Major depth question mark there.

And someplace you really want some good depth is at DB and outside our top 5, major question marks.

So this could be an elite defense with everyone healthy and playing to their potential, but with a few key injuries could also become a chump defense. Potential extremely large drop off, behind Gary and the starting DBs.

Though, really most my questions are for OL and OLB depth.

What a long day, but that was funny.
