When your making a move like this on defense you have to invest in the players that can become the cornerstones. In this defense it is absolutely necessary you have an extremely good NT and a ROLB that can rush the QB AND cover in space.

Teams that are the best in this 3-4 happen to have the best players at these positions. Now you can say Ted reached but not in this case with the Packers. What he does well we need.

What I like is his genes and upside. The kid comes in at 205LBS and is the best player on ST's the first couple years as he's growing into a LB. A late bloomer physically that started showing his athleticism his senior year.

Had he weighed 240 going in and played LB for three years we probably couldn't have touched him.

Jarron Gilbert was gone before we picked. We don't need any receivers or RBs. Most the TE were receiver-types which we already have in Finley. So th guys that thought we gave up too much should say who we could have picked that would have helped more than Matthews.

The guy lobbying for Mathews the most was our new LB Coach.

I have a feeling he knows a little bit about talent when he see's it.

This is what I'm saying. +1. Thompson learned his trade from Wolf, who made a few curious moves himself at times - chuck the charts and the math, if you see a guy who looks like your guy you get him. Worked out more often than not with Wolf, so we'll see how it works out with Thompson.
