Thompson: 'It Was A Pretty Successful Weekend'

GM Ted Thompson is on his way downstairs to wrap up the draft. I'll type as he talks ...

* Overview on the draft: "I think we had some guys targeted in spots where it worked out for us. There were some specific players that we'd sort of eyed, and those guys sort of fell down to where we thought they would go. ... All things considered, it was a pretty successful weekend."

* Specific guy that eyes got wide today? In fourth round, always talked about getting Lang. Had to watch for a long time, watched that one a little more than others.

* What like about Lang? Versatile, plays left tackle. Saw at all-star game in El Paso, where lined up at all five spots. Coaches like versatility. "He's got good feet, he's got good balance, he's a very good technician and I think he's a good player."

* Filled lot of needs, just that it lined up with best available? Stuck with approach. Didn't feel had to draft anybody at any position, were OK with core. Did try to balance offense/defense.

* See either of two offensive linemen as right tackle right away? Both have played tackle in college. "That's a coach's decision in terms of where they'll play them."

* On rest of NFC North: "Quite frankly, I've been so focused on what we've done ... I can't even recall what everyone did. ... This division's always tough, and I have no doubt it'll be difficult again." Will start looking at other people's drafts beginning tomorrow.

* Happy with what spent on defense? "I was happy we were able to get the players that we got." Success this year will depend on existing group, not just rookies.

* Keep track of Tauscher? "There hasn't been any determination made there. It's still a medical thing."

* If healthy, want Taushcer back? "I don't think it's a question of want. It's a question of timing."

* 3-4 affect draft? Certain guys fit, but doesn't change methodology.

* What done for pass rush, and what gives Jones a chance to be a player? Jones is interesting, started watching lot of tape the past month, more watched more like. Has rushed with hand down, detached from formation, as ILB, much like USC did with Matthews. Can really run, coverage ability, pass-rushing ability.

* Pass rush improved with the guys added? "I would hope they would add to the group ... but it's going to take the group, the scheme that Dom is going to put in, the whole thing." Want to create uncertainty on offense's part and more pressure.

* On Underwood: Versatile. Thought played CB and S well. Saw him in all-star game. Also saw at school in fall. Good size, runs well, very athletic. "We were pretty keen to him."

* Thinking on Quinn Johnson? "We just felt it was a great value pick." He and Alonso visited this year. SEC is physical. Effective lead blocker, physical presence. Big, physical guy.

* How long Underwood on radar? In mid-May, go combined scouting meetings and get first reports. Didn't know when at Ohio State or in high school, other than after the fact.

* How realistic/important which guys have immediate impact? "We'd like them to all pitch in and do their part." Coaches will determine how much, same as existing players.

* Two first-rounders: "I think they're capable of coming in and helping out" in first year.

* Raji and Matthews tough guys? "They're completely different players, obviously, but they're both physical guys. They play with strength, they play with leverage and I think they understand their position." Use hands, do things have to to play in NFL. "I think they're going to be OK."

* Filled holes for switch to 3-4: Didn't think there were gaping holes.

* How difficult to sit out second and third rounds, and have opportunities to get back in? No, nor did they try to. "I was pretty much done giving away picks." Long round when don't have picks for two whole rounds.

And we've been brought to an abrupt end.

We now have to buckle down to do stuff for the print edition, but keep it on the blog for further updates tonight.

Here once again are all the picks:

I don't believe this. Not knocking him, as it's obvious there are times when you don't tell the reporters the truth. It's a very strong coincidence that the very first two picks, two first rounders, were exactly what the team needed most.

* Two first-rounders: "I think they're capable of coming in and helping out" in first year.

If they both pan out and contribute right away, we got a much more complete team than last year. Can't wait to roll over da Bears.

I agree I just read Mike McCarthy statements also and some conflicting things ... Ted Thompson says all our players are enough for us already. And Mike McCarthy said the 9 pick was just based on the better player. I cant imagine raji being the better player; then crabtree. Unless you take need into effect.

When you do obviously its raji ...

These guys should just say - ya we needed a solid NT so we choose raji more based on need.

And we needed a OLB so we choose matthews based on need and his strength.

but whatever - we got the holes filled we needed too.

Now we got 4 months to wait ...

beast (6h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (6h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (16h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (16h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (18h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (19h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (19h) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (20h) : Thank you
wpr (20h) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (20h) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (20h) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (20h) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (20h) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (21h) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (21h) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (21h) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (21h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (21h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : what's so funny?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
