McCarthy: Draft 'About Trusting Your Board'

Coach Mike McCarthy is set to speak with reporters shortly -- the last person we'll have at the podium on draft weekend. I'll type as he speaks.

* How much do you think your defense approved through the draft? "I think our defense has improved from last year to this point for a number of different reasons." Scheme will lend versatility, players in offseason program improving, adding full draft class. "I feel very good about the improvement we've been able to make."

* Either of two offensive linemen can start at RT? Just met with Joe Philbin and James Campen, talking about OL rotation. Still guys coming through injuries. Wants to stop players from having to move all over. "We haven't made that decision as far as where the young guys will go, but" Allen Barbre could be in the mix along with Breno Giacomini. (That's interesting on Barbre. No mention of Tony Moll.)

* On rest of NFC North's draft, heavily offense: Don't pay much attention. Doing right thing for football team. 3-4 is as much about special teams as defense.

* Josh Sitton in right tackle mix? "Josh will play right guard."

* Focus on defense and line? "The draft was really all about trusting your board." Wasn't about offense and defense, even at No. 9, it was about value.

* Biggest dividend of Raji shoring up run defense? Won't say one player will fix everything. "I'll say one thing, we're going to play better run defense." 3-4 presents bigger challenge. Raji "will definitely contribute." Exceptional foot quickness for his body type. High recommended by Jeff Jagodzinski.

* Dream of Michael Crabtree: "Big Four, Big Five was mentioned a few times." Conversation between him and Thompson, that was a scenario talked about. When Cleveland traded out from No. 5, pretty confident they'd both be there. "I think Michael Crabtree is an outstanding prospect."

* What like about Quinn Johnson? Physicality jumps out. Remembers Thompson coming back from LSU, Johnson was someone he was excited about. "He's our type of player. He's a hard-nosed fullback. We think he also has special-teams value." Also can run. Couldn't pass up in fifth round.

* Johnson like a power runner? "Quinn Johnson has that ability to play power football" but No. 1 asset is in inside zone scheme. Run game won't look that different this year. Have made some adjustments to utilize player-specific skills.

* Thinks Raji and Matthews both can be three-down players.

* OK with end position in 3-4? "I think Ryan Pickett can go out and play end." Pickett has foot quickness and agility, but will talk to Pickett when he gets back from vacation. Johnny Jolly an excellent prospect, Montgomery could play it.

* Is Wynn an end or linebacker? Long-levered, has body type for end. Weight can get up.

* What target for rookies coming in this weekend? Gives chance to introduce young players to organization. Will take half day for football, other half for administrative with Rob Davis. Feels it's been productive to do rookies-only in initial camp.

* Anything looking for with undrafted free agents? Look at position needs. Scouts have spent about last 90 minutes working on it.

* As coaches, what get out of rookie minicamp? Coaching staff gets number of things -- opportunity to work with players, introduce to style and environment, get defensive and special-teams staffs on field for first time.

* What is Tony Moll's primary position? Has played many positions. Will probably play every position but center.

* Spend as much time watching new staff this weekend as new players? Probably more than last year.

* How excited to coach after changes? Looking forward to first game. "The lessons of 2008 need to be applied to our new direction." Important to carry forward things that didn't go right last year. Fun to watch young players move forward.

I guess we are staying with the dreaded ZBS and the normal bad pad level excuse again. When will he realize the scheme does not work in Green Bay?
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I blame less of it on the system and more of it on having coaches that can't teach the proper fundamentals to utilize the system.. that along with our reluctance to chop in the system. Mind you, I respect that we don't chop, but it makes it harder to effectively run the scheme.

Regardless.. we don't run a pure Zone anyway.. we blend it with some drive fundamentals and get a unique system.. what we lack is guys that have the ability to keep their asses low in the interior late in games and block with consistency.. We have a ton of poor technique inside.. Wells due to his short arms and Colledge just doesn't play low..

They can say what they want at this point, but my guess is that this line on opening day will have Cliffy and Colledge at tackles.. and Sitton, Spitz and someone on the interior. If Lang can make the jump quickly in competition.. I think he very well might be the other player.. I think he is that good.

I have said it a number of time, I don't like Colledge as a guard.. but his style of play projects outside very well. With getting Meredith late yesterday and his potential down the road, it should open the door for Colledge to move to the RT spot permanently.. just a guess.

I really don't understand why 3 yards and a cloud of dust is so much more appealing than the ZBS.

Pre-draft, all anyone wanted to talk about was our lack of personnel for a 3-4. Even though we will have alot of 4-3 looks as well.

Now, since we traded up to get a versatile rush LB to go opposite Kampy, and we have the supposed best NT prospect in the draft, I see alot of people upset with our offense. I don't get it. I think we improved greatly in this draft.

In some cases... it is merely on to the next area of concern.

If you aren't moving forward and attacking, you are sliding and falling backwards.

Consistent offensive line play is the next target.. and that has nothing to do with the draft. It has everything to do with getting it done upon the field.

With Preston, Lang and Meredith on board.. I expect more competition along the line and better results upon the field.

Totally agree with this. Before the pick, I was yelling at the TV for Oher or Crabtree. But, once ESPN showed Raji pumping his fist, I had to acknowledge that the team had addressed its most pressing need and gaping hole.

I don't disagree with your line of thinking, though, 93. This organization has spent a huge portion of its draft picks on one area of the field: O-line. And that area has been one of the poorest performing. I can only blame coaching for that. Hopefully our guys up front stay healthy this year and play with some actual fire in those trenches.

Zero2Cool (2h) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (3h) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (17h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (17h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
