Check your mock drafts lol.

Rams | Bought Sanchez a plane ticket?

Steve Wyche, of NFL.com, reports the St. Louis Rams have purchased a plane ticket for USC QB Mark Sanchez to fly from Los Angeles to St. Louis Sunday, April 26, when the team plans to introduce their top selection from the NFL Draft. While the team has bought a ticket, they may not select Sanchez. Wyche speculates the team could be trying to generate some trade interest by keeping Sanchez's name out there.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

To: Matthew Stafford

For the sum of: Forty One Million Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars

Signed: Detriot Lions

That would be a nice cheque.

Now if only Minnesota had a good QB this division would be set.

That is an unimaginable sum of money. Orygun, do you think he'll start this year? I say, at least not until game 5. they should park him firmly on the bench for the next couple years. let's see if his line can protect him. 41.7M guaranteed. That is CRAZY.

edit: clearly he's the highest paid rookie ever. where does this amount of guaranteed money place him in the entire NFL? Haynesworth got $41M guaranteed. By my math that puts the stafford contract as the highest amount of guaranteed money given to a player in the history of the NFL.

I'm going to puke.. This is not right at all... How? Why? ugh.. I just don't see why a rookie is getting paid this much...

That puts a huge target on him via his agent. This has gotten to be completely wrong in my opinion and this makes me sick quite frankly.

I find this pick extraordinarily boring. So much for creativity and imagination on the part of the Lions. Way to do exactly what ALL the pundits have been predicting for months.

But seriously . . . $41.7 million in guaranteed money? Are you KIDDING me? That is a 20 percent increase in guaranteed money over what Matt Ryan received last year. In these troubled times, where on earth does the justification for a 20% inflation rate in rookie guaranteed money arise? If Stafford never plays another down in the NFL, he will still have received 57.92% of his contract; that is unconscionable in my opinion.

If this inflation rate holds approximately true to form (it's never a completely linear equation), that means that the #9 pick will receive approximately $18.72 million in guaranteed cash. I can't see Ted Thompson paying that for . . . anyone who will still be available at #9, so unless no other team is prepared to make a deal, I think it's safe to predict that he will trade down.

I guess we can at least thank the Lions for doing their part to virtually guarantee that the owners will demand a rookie salary cap in the upcoming CBA.

On the other hand, given that Aaron Curry was shopping himself to the Lions relatively cheaply, and especially with word leaking that St. Louis has bought Mark Sanchez a plane ticket , some scouts are speculating that we may be on the verge of witnessing a precipitous Aaron Curry slide (edit: I seem to have lost the URL, sorry). It will be interesting to see what happens.

According to that one, we could pick between Raji, Curry and Andre Smith. I wouldn't mind that for a luxury problem.

As for Stafford's contract. It's just stupid, really. He's not even the best player in this draft, not by far, but being a QB bumbs not only his draft position up like crazy, but also his salary. I would've gone with either Curry or Jason Smith in a heartbeat. Then again, I'm not a general manager.

And we did take AJ Hawk with pick 5 not that long ago. I don't think Ted will have that much trouble with spending some dollars on a high draft pick.

Boring isn't what comes to mind for me. A profound sense of relief and justification for the position I took and absolutely stuck to when Ted signed Aaron Rodgers is what I am thinking on this day. I think of posters like Dhazer and his relentless critique of that signing. I think of what this kid is making to (probably) hump a clipboard. I think of the 50% failure rate of draft selections at this position. I think of what it is going to cost any team to sign a functional quarterback in the future.

I revel in the concept that because Ted made a leap of faith in Aaron Rodgers early, the likelihood of Rodgers becoming disenchanted with his contract is reduced. I reflect on the fact that every indication is that Ted Thompson hit on all cylinders in all respects when it comes to our quarterback position.

I remind myself that Aaron Rodgers base salary for 2009 is 680,000.

7.9 million in incentives---that means he has to earn it, folks.

Remember the argument that I and others put up at the time of the signing of Aaron? Our collective question was, "How much will it cost to sign him in the future?"

The answer is blossoming before our eyes this fine Saturday morning.

This signing is quite interesting in another respect. What will happen next year if Detroit finishes in last place (again)and has the first pick in the draft (again)?

...and GM and Chrysler are about to enter bankruptcy.
