Per Reports:

100% ‘Vaccinated’ NFL Team Loses Their Head Coach, Two Assistants, the GM, and Two Players Due to Covid

The Arizona Cardinals are the last undefeated team in the National Football league, but they will have to try to keep their unbeaten streak going without their head coach. Kliff Kingsbury became the first coach to miss a game over Covid protocols.

All players and coaches on the team are “fully vaccinated,” which brings into question (as it seems to do every week) what the point of total vaccination is if it doesn’t protect them from infections? They like to say that breakthrough cases are rare, but the head coach, general manager Steve Keim, quarterbacks coach Cam Turner, another unnamed assistant, outside linebacker Chandler Jones, and defensive tackle Zach Allen will all miss the game this weekend against the Cleveland Browns because they tested positive.

Is it worth forcing these extremely health individuals with very low hospitalization and death rates to continue to take vaccines (and the forthcoming boosters) which for this age group and health profile, may do as much harm as good?

A loaded question of course, but I'll bite.

1. Nobody is being forced to get vaccinated. It's a requirement for coaches to coach in the NFL, but they can get a different job if they don't want to get the vaccine. Additionally, many coaches, scouts, etc are in higher risk groups (age, obesity, other health issues). For players, it's not a requirement.

2. The vaccine doesn't prevent infection. That's simply not how vaccines work. It provides antibodies that more effectively fight the infection if you get it. This means you're less likely to get sick but if you do, you're less likely to get seriously ill, and have a much lower chance of dying. It also shortens the recovery time, and helps to reduce the spread of the virus. Shorter infection time and lower severity of infection = less contagion spread as there is quite literally less of the virus in the air (at least as far as I understand it).

Getting vaccinated helps to protect you but also your community and especially those who are unable to get vaccinated (young children, people with specific medical conditions).

3. I'm not aware of credible medical sources that suggest getting the vaccine is riskier than not getting it for the average person, regardless of how young or healthy they are.

Of course, if you have some sort of medical condition, like an immune disorder or have had allergic reactions to vaccines in the past, you should talk to your doctor to make sure it is safe for you personally (this is a reasonable thing to do with any vaccine or medication you're considering taking).

So, should we continue to encourage football coaches, players, and the general population to get vaccinated? Yes.

I really don’t want to debate the vaccines and mandates per se because that rabbit hole is sort of unproductive and produces all sorts of negative vibes. Clearly, for the elderly and the at risk benefit from them.

I guess I am more focused on the protocols for the league. The one aspect which is scientifically not true is that when you are vaccinated you diminish the threat of passing the virus to somebody…the opposite appears to be the case which is why the mask mandates came back.

I had thought there were two testing protocols, one for vaccinated, which is most of the guys, and one for the unvaccinated. My question is doesn’t it seem that it would make more sense to do more testing for all since there is quite a few breakthrough cases (both within and outside of sports.)

I think the teams have a false sense of security in regard to certain vaccinated players who may or may not have a viral load and may be passing it on to other players, especially when they are vaccinated.

I guess I am suggesting more frequent testing for all staff, players, coaches etc, versus the current two tiered system.

Aug 30, 2021: NFLPA accepts NFL proposal to increase COVID-19 testing among players who are fully vaccinated

The NFL Players Association has accepted the NFL's proposal to increase COVID-19 testing for fully vaccinated players amid the ongoing Delta variant surge, one of several tweaks the sides made Monday to their joint protocols as the regular season approaches.

Fully vaccinated players will now be tested at least once every seven days, up from once every 14 days. They will be offered the option of testing twice a week, and those with vulnerable cohabitants at home can opt for daily testing, according to the protocols.

The NFLPA has been pushing for daily testing for all players since the start of training camp, but NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills (blah blah blah... NFL is against doing it daily)

ESPN  wrote:

So since the NFL is already doing what you're suggesting, and been doing it for a little while now, can we stop talking about this? You know, since you (nor I) want to talk about this. Please and Thank You.
