According to Over the Caps projections (you may have to fiddle with the tabs), Green Bay is projected to be $48,917,256 over the cap next year. So yes, I would say we are tight against the cap (and remember, it took some work with Rodgers contract to create some room this year). If I'm looking at Crosbys contract correctly , then a post June 1 2022 cut would save the team 3.4 million dollars with a 1.3 dead cap number with a prorated bonus on the books for 2023 for 1 million. So if Green Bay is hanging on and protecting a K on their practice squad, it might be an indication they like going forward in the future.
Another angle is, how many players do you need between the main roster and the practice squad at each position? There's 6 WRs on the main roster and another 3 on the practice squad. Is a 10th WR even worth it? Why not have a 2nd K , develop him and have him around for emergencies?
