Sitting out OTAs and skipping mandatory minicamp are very different things, so expect the Packers’ other wideouts to follow the same path Funchess is taking. One of the bigger stories out of the first two weeks of Organized Team Activities for the Green Bay Packers  has been the absence of the team’s wide receiver corps. The team’s presumed top five receivers — Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Devin Funchess — all chose not to report for the first two weeks of practice, which are voluntary.
Of that group, only two are sacrificing any money by choosing not to report over these past two weeks. Davante Adams has a $500,000 workout bonus in his contract for 2021, while Funchess has $50,000 in his, but both players have forfeited those amounts with their decision not to participate in OTAs.
Furthermore, none of the five players have spoken publicly on the reasons for their OTA absence, leaving fans to wonder if the group coordinated the plan and, if so, for what reason. Is the goal to express solidarity with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, to call attention to the NFLPA’s goal of moving to an all-virtual offseason, or something else? With no public comments from the group, fans, the media, and even coaches are left in the dark.
However, the absence is coming to an end. On Friday morning, Funchess became the first of this group to speak publicly, tweeting that he will be in Green Bay on Monday to participate in minicamp

With players subject to fines up to about $100,000 if they skip minicamp, this was always the most likely scenario. Now, with one member of the group returning, it would be a surprise if any the rest of the team’s receiving corps chose not to join Funchess in returning to Green Bay. Hopefully the team will make a few of those players available to the media so they can clarify what statement, if any, they were trying to make by not reporting for OTAs.
On Thursday, wide receivers coach Jason Vrable illustrated the team’s lack of information about the receivers’ absence from voluntary workouts in his press conference with the media. Vrable revealed that the wideouts had participated in all of the “Phase 1” activities, which consisted of virtual meetings with the coaching staff, before going dark at the start of OTA practices around May 25th. Their absence that week seemingly came as a surprise to him and to the rest of the staff. “There’s been no talk of (a coordinated effort) with me,” Vrable said, but next week may be an opportunity for the players to illuminate the situation.
For Funchess, next week’s minicamp will be the first time he actually steps foot on the Packers’ practice field. Funchess signed a one-year contract in April 2020, but last year’s offseason program was fully virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funchess then opted out of the 2020 season on the day the Packers reported for training camp in late July, choosing to sit out the year in an effort to help protect his family.

The NFLPA has been beating the drum for years about wanting players to skip the voluntary portion of camp. Thus teams have been more willing to make part of the player salary tied to OTAs.
it makes sense that Adams, who is looking for his big payday, skip the OTA even if it costs him $500,000. He will make it back and then some when he signs his next deal. A serious injury could leave him on the outside looking in.

Davante will not make that $500k back. The team isn't going to say oh hey you didn't meet your workout bonus in a contract you previously agreed to so this new contract we'll kick in $500k we don't have and don't want to offer.

It's lost money and now his fourth generation great great great grandkids will have to wear reebok instead of Nike!!!!

Glad to see Funchess state he's showing up. Shouldn't even need to be said though. I hate media.

packerfanoutwest (4m) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (6m) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (7m) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (7m) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (7m) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (11m) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (11m) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (12m) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (12m) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (14m) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (17m) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (20m) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (22m) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (22m) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (32m) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (37m) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (40m) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (40m) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (42m) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (52m) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (57m) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (1h) : Packers will get in
beast (1h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (1h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (1h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (2h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (4h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (4h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (4h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (4h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (14h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (14h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (17h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
