Coy Cronk Rookie ‘May Be Steal of College Free Agency’

Two injury-plagued seasons and a late bout with COVID ruined the draft hopes of this 42-game Big Ten starter.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Did the Green Bay Packers land the best player in undrafted free agency?

Potentially, yes, said one NFL scout.

“I love Coy,” one scout said of Iowa offensive tackle Coy Cronk. “If Coy can get healthy and get back to where he was playing before the ankle injury in 2019, then may be the steal of the college free agency class across the board.”

Cronk started 40 consecutive games at left tackle for Indiana before suffering a broken ankle four games into the 2019 season. Dr. David Porter, a foot and ankle specialist affiliated with the Indianapolis Colts, did the surgery.

Given an extra year of eligibility, Cronk transferred to Iowa, shifted to right tackle and won the starting job. However, COVID-19 had limited his ability to rehab the injury, he struggled through his two starts and was shut down. With his range of motion finally back to normal, Cronk would have been back in the lineup for the bowl game against Missouri but COVID struck the Tigers and the game was canceled.

The battle for the Packers last OL spot or two, has the potential to be the deepest of all the Packers as they have

~ Two almost NFL veterans in Nijman and Braden.
~ Three late round draft choices in Stepaniak, Hanson, Van Lanen
~ Decent group of UDFAs in OL Jacob Capra, OL Coy Cronk, OL Jon Dietzen (and returning UDFA from the PS last year G Zack Johnson). 4 guys here.

All these guys competing but 2 (or slim chance at 3) main rosters spots, and guessing 1-2 PS spots (assuming we're back to 10 guys on the PS).

OL depth has the potential to be the deepest as far as PS goes. I think the players whom shows the best long term potential as a LT might have a spot locked, which gives Nijman an early advantage in both experience and position. But could them drafting so many OTs in part be because they want to upgrade over him?

EXACTLY! He had very large potential and NFL teams that usually are very willing to over pay in the draft for large potential guys (especially when they're large athletes) all decided to pass on him, because he was so extremely raw, even for them.

He NEEDS to show he's developed a bit of that potential, as if he hasn't developed some by now, then he's probably never will. Of course, that being said, it's possible he's already developed and we just don't know about it because they haven't had to put him on the field last year and he was injured for much of training camp (though we didn't get to see training camp either).

Though the coaches seemed to believe Wagner and Jenkins were better OT options and that the OGs replacing them inside would give a better best 5, and they've brought in a lot of college OTs, which isn't the best sign for them thinking he's developing. But who knows, maybe they just want even more OTs and some of the OTs will be OGs in the pros.
