Just hook up electricity to the railings of the ship.

Fry them as they reach the top.

Making a shot from 75-80 feet is VERY easy. Making it on rough seas under darkness, now, that's pretty amazing.

The interesting thing is American Special Operations forces shoot better in the dark than in the light, which I find peculiar, since NVGs rob you of your depth perception.

A sense of safety which calms them down maybe? I mean, if you shoot unexpected, there's a far smaller chance that you'll get noticed when it's dark than when it's light. Especially since alot of the states/terrorists and what not seem to be less technologically advanced. Or at least, that's my theory. I have no idea, I haven't come close to combat. You'd know better than me, I guess. Did you have the same?

I've never fired with NVG's to my knowledge. However, I did discover at our last drill that I fire equally well (or mediocre, however you wish to say it) left handed as right handed.

I'm really starting to think I may be what they call a "latent left-hander."

I don't know if you guys ever heard of this, but I'm betting those shooters were not "just" SEALS. I'm going DEVGRU here. I think that was three simultaneous hits.

I lived with SEAL team 6 a long time ago for about 9 months, before DEVGRU came along. We jarheads built up a strong positive relationship with them, but at the same time resented how the Navy accommodated them vs. us, at least berthing compartment-wise.

The shots were not difficult, or they absolutely would not have been taken, imo. . The ramifications of a foul up were. It really sucks at your promotion board if you accidentally whack a hostage. Navy is touchy that way.

I got a kick out of some of the comments here, but don't confuse that with a anything but complete respect for those fellas, however coddled I might think they are.

Oh, and chances are good they learned at least some of their marksmanship courtesy of Marines either at the MTU battalion at Quantico or Kaneohoe Bay Hawaii, so I feel like I'm "vested" with this accomplishment, service-wise.

DEVGRU stands for -- get this -- Naval Special Warfare Development Group. WTF?? What's up with all these corporate-sounding euphemisms in the military these days? We don't call it Delta Force anymore -- no, we call it Combat Action Group (CAG) now.

Sounds so tame and innocuous. So very businesslike. I can just ssee it now: You have your bald, bespectacled, vaguely androgynous spokesperson at the podium, blinking owlishly in the flashing lights, and stating unctuously, "Ah, yes, The Honorable Musawwa ben-Gawi was reallocated by the Combat Actions Group in conjunction with our Naval Special Warfare Development Group as part of a routine efficiency upgrade initiative."

Whatever happened to "We offed the fucker"?

I swear, the pencil-pushers are taking over the armed forces.

It wasn't the hits that makes me think of DEVGRU, exactly. It was the confidence in taking the shots. Call it logistics. Those boys did not magically appear on the fantail of that ship. They had to grade the preservation of the dope on their weapon on an individual basis. They could not be wrong, and I suspect that the jump was a night HALO. This spells serious experience.

Ever gone deer hunting to discover that your scope got knocked off in the off-season? No? You sighted it in before you went hunting, didn't you? Ya think those Navy boys were afforded that opportunity after dropping 10 thousand feet into the ocean at night?

The skinnies might have been a little suspicious if a bunch of squids decided that now would be a good time to be sighting in their weapons. :thumbleft:

I'm curious, beyond the fact that these guys were SOF, what makes you think this was a HALO drop? I would think it would make more sense to take the shots (which as you pointed out, were probably close range) from a more stable platform; i.e., a ship of decent mass. These guys were on a lifeboat, so it's not like the ops landed on the lifeboat itself.

They HALO'd in the vicinity of the ship they subsequently boarded, an Arleigh Burke class destroyer, the USS Bainbridge. The reason I think they HALO'd in was to avoid detection getting onto the ship. (Also why I think it happened at night) The reason I think they went in lower than 25,000-35,000 feet is that a requirement to avoid sophisticated detection systems was not at play here, as we were facing a bunch of third-world gomer pirate types, and that got rid of some very bulky equipment that would not be necessary. (breathing-wise, again, getting to the preservation of that gun case) So, the stable platform was that destroyer. That is where they took the shots from. I suspect the shooters came off the USS Boxer. I doubt they came from the Boxer, (originally-having to do with the number of full-blown snipers in a typical SEAL team [1, vs. EVERYONE on team 6] but in that there was an ongoing interdiction mission from that task force, I can easily see the SEALS being onboard that ship, so that part I'm not sure of. It would most likely be one of the gator Navy-type ships if they were deployed. Don't get confused though. They could just as easily come from little creek and done a full-blown HALO job from a platform launched there. (Virginia) or elsewhere on this planet.

Getting on the back of that ship with a known good weapon is what is especially impressive to me. Hats off to the Navy.

So they did fire from a destroyer. That makes a hell of a lot more sense to me.
