I read the SEAL snipers took out three of the Hi Jackers with three shots?

In Rolling Seas?

That is bad ass.

What I don't get is why ships in that area aren't armed to begin with? When pirates start getting killed, they'll be a little bit more reluctant.

Like for instance, they have cruise ships armed with, get this (I'm not making this up), high powered water hoses. Wow. So scary.

Shoot the f*****s. Once that starts happening, they're not going to want to be pirates anymore.

I think they should leak word of a "Cruise" ship to the area, but make it a Pseudo Cruise ship filled with an armed task force, Imagine what a pirate would feel like when boarding something like that...

I heard that if you throw them a beachball, they can catch it on their noses and balance it while shooting the antenna off an ant at 1000 yards.

Great job......catch the whole rest of them and send them to Pittsburg. Then can be real "Pirates!"

I'm surprised 1 pirate did survive. If the sharpshooters decided to shoot, why not the 4th person too? It would be quite a risk to leave 1 alive who could have shot the captain. Anyone have details on how the takedown occurred?

I am thinking only 3 pirates were left on the boat...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30202744

WASHINGTON - As dusk began to fall Sunday, the Somali pirates holding captain Richard Phillips had grown edgy.

As they bobbed in the ocean near the USS Bainbridge, a Navy destroyer sent to rescue Phillips, the teenage pirates were experiencing withdrawal after days without khat, a mildly narcotic leaf chewed in for its stimulant effects. "They were realizing they were in a no-win situation," said a senior U.S. military official. "They were floating around in rough waters, they were tired. . . . These guys didn't have their chew with them."

After the on-scene commander judged that Phillips's life was suddenly in immediate jeopardy, three shots rang out from the Bainbridge in indistinguishable succession, felling the three pirates in the lifeboat. Bound tightly, Phillips could not move to celebrate the end of his ordeal until Navy SEALs climbed aboard the small craft and set him free.

"It was pretty remarkable that these snipers nailed these guys," said the senior military official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "You think of rough seas, 75, 80 feet away, and under darkness, and they got them. Three pirates, three rounds, three dead bodies."

International law prevents the arming of merchant ships.

What I think is a fairly simple solution is to send out one or two "bait" ships. That fat ol' freighter looking prime for picking... Oops! Where'd that deck gun come from?

That would, of course, be a violation of the Geneva Conventions. The ship would have to be marked in some way as a as a military asset. Otherwise, under international law, the military personal could be charged as spies by another power were they to be for some strange reason accosted.

An alternative would be to commission a ship of privateers, which to my knowledge is fully legal under international law.
