The move should be official on the transaction wire shortly. The Green Bay Packers have done exactly what followers of the team have expected for the past week. As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and later confirmed by the team, tight end Jace Sternberger is being reactivated to the 53-man roster from injured reserve.
The move should be official on the league’s formal transaction report on Saturday afternoon.
A rookie from Texas A&M, Sternberger will likely make his NFL debut on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers . He returns to active status after successfully practicing over the past few weeks once he was designated as being eligible to return. He will help bolster a tight end group that has been short on youth in recent weeks with the injury to Robert Tonyan. As a result of Tonyan’s absence, Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis have shouldered the bulk of the load.
This move was all but assured this week when the Packers released tight Evan Baylis from the roster, leaving them with just three tight ends on the 53. Baylis returned to the team’s practice squad a few days later.
However, safety Ibraheim Campbell , who seems ready to return from the Physically Unable to Perform list, will not be back on the 53 in time for the game. However, the team can wait to make a decision on him until next week, when they will have to return him to the roster or place him on injured reserve. Given the lack of depth at safety, expect the team to find a way to get Campbell back on the roster again early next week.
