About half an hour from my house, in the depths of the Pine Barrens of South Jersey, stands a
monument to Emilio Carranza , "the Lindbergh of Mexico," who crashed there on the night of July 12, 1928, while attempting a nonstop flight from New York City to Mexico City. The children of Mexico contributed pennies to erect the monument to their hero.
To this day, the American Legion Post 11 of Cherry Hill drives out to the monument every year on the Saturday closest to July 12 to honor his memory.
I was pretty moved when I stumbled upon this monument one day while wandering randomly in the woods.
