I'm willing to bet Aaron Rodgers redoes his contract between 2019-2020.

None of the 6 highest paid QBs in the league made the playoffs in 2018. They combined for 31 wins.

Aaron Rodgers: $33.5M
Matt Ryan: $30M
Kirk Cousins: $28M
Jimmy Garoppolo: $27.5M
Matthew Stafford: $27M
Derek Carr: $25M

just means teams can't bring in other good players because most of the cap is taken up on 1 guy. The extension was stupid I said it then and I will stand by it. He hasn't been healthy in a few years and he is not the same qb. Right now I would say he is an above average qb but not a great qb. He lost his accuracy and he still holds on to the ball to damn long. But the biggest gripe I have is he has let the media get in his head with all the greatness talk. I still would have loved him to get traded to cleveland when we could have gotten Mayfield and Barkley and maybe even a 2nd rounder

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Yes, his contract extension was a mistake. Not sure why anyone was in a hurry to extend it or why the media kept talking about it. Was it his agent? Did he know he had lost it and put pressure on the Packers through his agent?

I hope he works on accuracy drills in the offseason. He has been terrible this year.

You can complain all you want but be is the least of our problems. Cobb, Graham, Matthews contracts are the issues. We have plenty of cap room to retool.

Further, if we didnt have 12, with our roster, you wouldn't have a chance in hell of getting a top coach.

I was opposed to the extension, and I was vehemently opposed to the absurd amount of guaranteed money it entailed (though not as bad as what the Vikings offered Cousins, obviously). I don't believe for a minute that Rodgers would have walked had the Packers not made him the highest-paid player in the league, and if he had, fuck him. The winningest quarterback in the league is nowhere close to the highest paid -- on a year-to-year basis, at least -- so what has our quarterback done since 2014 to warrant that kind of remuneration? I've observed before that no team in the past couple of decades, and perhaps ever, has managed to win a Super Bowl after making their quarterback the highest-paid player in the league. With the exception of the Patriots, the winning formula these days seems to be a young, athletic, cheap quarterback surrounded by a talented offensive supportive cast and a reasonably dominant defense. The Packers are just about the antithesis of that right now, although they have some good pieces to build around.

Somewhere around 2014, and certainly by 2015, I started to sour on Ted Thompson, because it was becoming apparent to me that he was going in the same direction that Bill Polian had gone in Indianapolis: relying entirely on his quarterback to carry the team and compensate for shortcomings elsewhere. After Polian got deservedly fired, I figured Thompson would eventually be shown the door if he didn't turn things around, which he never succeeded in doing. After years of his making the same mistakes Polian had, it was time for him to go.

I like a lot of Gutekunst's ideas, but overall, his splashy free-agent acquisitions haven't panned out (not that Wilkerson's injury is his fault, of course), and I think he got off on the wrong foot with the premature extension of Rodgers. I know the salary cap continues to rise, but I hope Rodgers' contract doesn't become a millstone surround the Packers' neck. As much as I love the surgical style Rodgers used to play, I'd rather invest that money in a suffocating defense and win Super Bowls, even if that means doing it with a young, inexperienced quarterback who throws an extra interception here and there

It's too early to throw in the towel, obviously, but the early returns aren't good. Whoever takes over as head coach is going to need to have a firm hand and hold Rodgers accountable for the little things, even if that means sending him to passing camp and forcing him to play more preseason reps.

Incidentally, I doubt there was ever any serious chance to of Joe Philbin being handed the reins next season, but if there were, I hope Rodgers' concussion slammed that door shut for good.

If you are watching the Colts, you are seeing how it should be done. A dominating offensive line. Luck literally wasnt touched in the first half. If you give Rodgers that kind of time, and a running attack, WPR, Smokey and I could be his wide-outs and we could get open.

I couldn't agree more on the defense.
- We had some very good talent up front, and they all got hurt (Clark, Daniels, Wilkerson)
- Our LB's suck relative to just about every other team I can think of.
- We have some good young DB's who need to be coached up, but have terrific promise

But it all starts, and ends, up front on both sides of the ball. If you want to dominate spend more money there. Rodgers will be excellent again, in a better scheme and a better team around him.

The whole "you cant have a good team because 1 guy gets too much money" is just the laziest argument. It might surprise some to find out that GB is actually 17th in cap spending on the QB position this season. So much for that stupid reasoning.

Some teams that had more of their cap allocated toward QB this year: Ravens, Saints, Vikings, Colts, Seahawks, Steelers, Browns, Chargers, Patriots. Also GB only spent less than 1m on QBs this year than the Eagles. Making any kind of observation off of yearly averages is just about meaningless.

GB wasn't bad this year for plenty of reasons. Not being able to afford any good players because Rodgers yearly average is 33m was not one of those reasons.

No worries, 2019 we are 8th. Moving on up!!

Edit: How does Aaron Rodgers get $66.9 million in 2018 cash dollars and we're ranked 17th (we're actually 14th) in QB position spending?
