Haven't had a chance to read it yet. At work.

Can I assume it's yet another article exaggerating the scheme change and missing the fact that our scheme will be molded to fit our roster and not the other way around?

Yeah, pretty much. And if things go south this year it'll be his fault for refusing to participate in FA. Boilerplate stuff at this point, really.

So if we have another losing season which would be 3 out of 5 years for Ted Thompson, who do we blame? But i did read the article and basically sounds like we are still rebuilding. I do see a built in excuse with the new defensive scheme already for Ted Thompson.

I don't know why people think this arbitrary fraction "3/5", "2/5", etc. means anything at all. First of all, 2004 was generally accepted by everyone as a rebuilding year, based on the aging roster and the cap situation. So scratch that off the fraction. Then you have the 8-8 season which is what, a wash?
What I'm looking for is improvement and an understandable plan towards excellence. There has been steady improvement every year except for last year. Part of that was our 1st year QB not being able to put the team on his back and shrug off the rest of the team's errors to singlehandedly win the game. Part of it was our defense being in disarray and by all accounts split in terms of the philosophy of the coaches and players.
Well, the defensive split was addressed. Rodgers will only get better.

And from my personal perspective, I get what they're doing, and I don't think this was a 6-10 quality team in 2008. Poor teams don't randomly blow good teams out of the water and then find weird and frustrating ways to lose a ton of games against mediocre to great opponents by 3 or 4 points. It was just a frustrating year. A mind bogglingly frustrating year. But I can't say I want the entire team philosophy and free agency strategy and salary strategy AND upper management to be completely overhauled if it somehow freakishly happens again.

I really don't think it will though. This team is too good for that.

And I guarantee you nobody in the Packers organization is planning an excuse for a losing 2009 season. Only some fans.

I actually agree with this article. If the Packers have yet another losing record, people should start looking at Ted Thompson as a possible cause for the recent decline.

This being said, the Packers are gonna go 19-0 and this discussion will be dismissed 😉

I have no respect for the people who claim to be Packers fans, yet are actually rooting for the team to have a losing season so that they can get rid of Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy. I don't care if we had Matt Millen at the helm -- I'd still be rooting for us to go to the Big Dance every single damn year.

I don't WANT the Packers to lose this year, HOWEVER, I feel pretty confident that the guy in charge doesn't have what it takes to get this team where it needs to be. I'm not cheering for losses, but I'd rather ship out the guy responsible for them instead of hanging on year after year with the "we'll get em next year" line of crap.

I FEEL I know this team is headed in the wrong direction. Not saying I am right but it's no different then you feeling it's headed in the RIGHT direction. When I feel this way whole-heartedly I do of course want the suffering to be over and a new invigorated line of attack initiated.

I agree with what you said (first paragraph and 1/2)

I think our front 7 needs work; or some new blood in the mix. But besides that I think we will do really well as far as D goes this coming year.

As long as arod has a line to fall behind we are going to still rock it in the O department.

Okay, how about this: Which would you prefer; the team to rebound and have a good season, thus proving you're wrong (but remember: the team you root for has a good season), or the team to have a lousy season, proving you right and leading to Thompson's/McCarthy's ouster?

Personally, I'm with NonStop - I don't care if the team's GM is Satan incarnate, I'd much rather watch my team win. I don't have any problem with negative opinions and feelings about Thompson; everyone is entitled to have their own view of things. What I do have a problem with is fans who want to be right more than they want their team to succeed.

I don't much care for Thompson, but I sure as hell do not want to go through another 3 years of rebuilding with a new GM/HC.

I'm hoping they right this ship and kickass.

I liked the Packers before Thompson and McCarthy and I'm going to like the Packers after they're gone just the same.

When I watch the Packers, I see the Packers, not Ted, not Mike, the Packers. That's who I root for.

+1 on that, man. If I was rooting for coaches and GMs I'd have a new favorite team every year. I've stuck w/ the Pack for damn near 40 years at this point, and I'm not gonna stop.

I like the Offensive core Ted Thompson is getting together. He has our very young and improving franchise qb, a slew of very talented young wr's (jennings, jones, jordy), and a very talented young TE in the mix with finley. Even our rb's have no age to them, i think if he can make this line above average then this can be a dominating unit for the next 5 years. since were in no worry of losing our own stars due to cap.
We are born naked, wet and hungry. Then things get worse.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

You're free to rely on your feeling that this team is going in the wrong direction, of course, but the reality is I haven't the faintest clue either way. The fact is, I don't know a damn thing about football. My parents never allowed me to play, and I don't have TV, so I don't get to watch much of it either (which is why I came to this site in the first place). In the heat of the moment, I don't know whether I'm watching a draw or a screen. I couldn't tell you whether I'm seeing the linebacker or the cornerback flying toward the ball. I doubt I could point out the right tackle versus the right guard, even under the threat of torture and dismemberment. I don't watch football to dissect plays and analyze angles. I watch it purely for the excitement, the action, the adrenaline. The thrill of the yard and the agony of the inch.

Like I said, I know next to nothing about the mechanics of football. If I thought I could manage a football team, you can be sure I'd be clamoring for a position, but I freely acknowledge I don't. What I am is a student of history, however, not to mention a two-time war vet (though nothing compared to dfosterf), so I have at least an intuitive understanding of tactics and strategy. I know that in war, the most crafty and aggressive man tends to win, and that when you circle the wagons, it's usually the beginning of the end.

I couldn't care less whether Mike McCarthy calls a post or a buttonhook, a curl or a fly (and I couldn't tell you which is which, anyway). All I know is that when our team is steamrolling down the field, and he reins them in to promote "balance," it disrupts the flow of our team. I know that when we have one of the best red zone quarterbacks in the league and we settle for field goals instead of touchdowns, we're probably going to lose. I know that when we settle into a prevent defense instead of going for the kill, the other team is probably going to march down the field on us.

Do I know whether Ted Thompson's doing a good job? No, but I'm a pragmatist. I prefer to see the results on the field. When I see a first-year starting quarterback throw for over 4000 yards and score 32 touchdowns, I figure Ted Thompson made a good choice. When I see a receiver come out of nowhere to be one of the most electric players in the game today, I give Ted Thompson credit. When I see a free agent that no one else wanted turn into a stud who plays entire seasons through injury, I figure Ted Thompson has foresight. When I see our offense put our team in a position to win week after week, only to see a defense decimated collapse in the waning moments, I'm inclined to give Ted Thompson the benefit of the doubt.

Is Ted Thompson taking this team in the right direction? That remains to be seen. But until I know how to perform his job better than he does, I'm going to leave the managing to the manager and just root my heart out for the team he puts on the field every single week. Whether that means I'm pumping my fist in jubilation or sobbing in despair at the end of the game, the Packers are still my team -- and it's still just a game.
